Book Description

3 April 2012

A magical, heartwarming memoir from one of Hollywood’s most beloved icons

Over the past four decades, the landmark NBC hit television series I Dream of Jeannie has delighted generations of audiences and inspired untold numbers of teenage crushes on its beautiful blond star, Barbara Eden. Part pristine Hollywood princess and part classic bombshell, with innocence, strength, and comedic talent to spare, Barbara finally lets Jeannie out of her bottle to tell her whole story.
Jeannie Out of the Bottle takes us behind the scenes of I Dream of Jeannie as well as Barbara’s dozens of other stage, movie, television, and live concert performances. We follow her from the hungry years when she was a struggling studio contract player at 20th Century Fox through difficult weeks trying to survive as a chorus girl at Ciro’s Sunset Strip supper club, from a stint as Johnny Carson’s sidekick on live TV to tangling on-screen and off with some of Hollywood’s most desirable leading men, including Elvis Presley, Clint Eastwood, Paul Newman, and Warren Beatty. From the ups and downs of her relationship with her Jeannie co-star Larry Hagman to a touching meeting with an exquisite and vulnerable Marilyn Monroe at the twilight of her career, readers join Barbara on a thrilling journey through her five decades in Hollywood.
But Barbara’s story is also an intimate and honest memoir of personal tragedy: a stillborn child with her first husband, Michael Ansara; a verbally abusive, drug-addicted second husband; the loss of her beloved mother; and the accidental heroin-induced death of her adult son, just months before his wedding. With candor and poignancy, Barbara reflects on the challenges she has faced, as well as the joys she has experienced and how she has maintained her humor, optimism, and inimitable Jeannie magic throughout the roller-coaster ride of a truly memorable life.
Illustrated with sixteen pages of photographs, including candid family pictures and rare publicity stills, Jeannie Out of the Bottle is a must-have for every fan, old and new.

From the Hardcover edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very entertaining autobiography 11 Jun 2013
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
My father-in-law wanted this book as Barbara Eden was one of his favourite film stars. The book has not disappointed him - in fact, he couldn't put it down and read it very quickly indeed. He was so impressed with it, he passed it to me to enjoy also. Highly recommend. Some lovely photographs as well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Jucy but Classy 26 Oct 2011
Barbara Eden's infectious charm comes through in print almost as vividly as it does when she is in front of a camera. This book is filled with fun and jucy anecdotes, as well as a look at the darker aspects of Ms. Eden's life. Though she's had more than her share of suffering, she has somehow seemed to retain a positive attitude and an indomitable spirit, which is very inspiring. I was also impressed by the kindess and diplomacy she displays when discussing even her most difficult collegues. Barbara Eden is truly a class act. I highly recommend this book for any fan of Barbara Eden or classic tv.

2.0 out of 5 stars It needed a better editor (and writer) 4 Jun 2011
I met Elvis and Bob Hope and Lucy and Desi and Red Buttons and Marilyn Monroe and JFK and George Burns and Sally Field and Tom Jones and Johnny Carson and Angie Dickenson and Orson Welles and Pat Boone and Debbie Reynolds and Elizabeth Taylor and Joan Collins and Tony Curtis and Fred Astaire and Paul Newman and Peter Lorre and Burl Ives and Warren Beatty and Clint Eastwood and Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn and Lauren Bacall and a lot of other famous people. And Larry Hagman is a jerk. The end.

That's pretty much what you'll find in this autobiography -- nonstop and pointless name-dropping from start to finish. Barbara has padded her life story with so much "and then I met..." that it quickly becames annoying and silly. She brags about her innocence and virtue and reels off a list of men who couldn't keep their hands off her. It never ended and made her sound conceited.

Her behind-the-scenes gossip aboutthe "Jeannie" show was interesting, but while she claims to admire co-star Larry Hagman, she destroys him personally and professionally. She's certainly had great sorrow in her life, but overall, the story is glossy and shallow.
