2.0 out of 5 stars Godard: The 60s Collection - Vivre Sa Vie, 9 Feb 2012
This review is from: Jean-Luc Godard - The 60s Collection [DVD] (DVD)
Godard's 'Vivre Sa Vie' (one of three films in this set) is, in my opinion, one of the most important pieces on cinema ever made. It is a remarkably intelligent film that rewards repeated viewing and is a masterclass in cinema. It is therefore very sad that this film should be presented in this collection in such a poor quality, even though the fact that it is digitally remastered is highlighted on the DVD cover. Vivre Sa Vie, as presented here suffers from light streaks along each side of the image, high contrast, unsharp tableaux captions and a crackly sound track. I do not have a fetish for 'quality' however the quality of the Criterion blu-ray is so immeasurably better than this, it is practically a different film. I do not own a blu-ray player and I do not really wish to invest in one, all I want is an effective DVD transfer, keeping the sensitive qualities of Godard's film, however this simply is not it. By the way, the other films are much more reasonable DVD presentations of Masculin:Femanin and 2 or 3 Things...
