Product Description

2008 crime comedy starring Jean-Claude Van Damme. Unlike most of his other films, this is not an all-action thriller but instead an opportunity for Van Damme to play a meatier role. The role he plays is himself, but in a kind of parallel universe. Unable to find work in Hollywood, broke and involved in a custody battle for his daughter, the eponymous JCVD returns to his native Belgium, where he still enjoys hero status. Once there he finds himself caught up in the middle of a hostage drama and acting out a different sort of role to the ones he is used to playing in films.

Washed-up, fighting bankruptcy and caught in the midst of a desperate struggle to win his daughter back from the jaws of a bitter custody battle, Van Damme unwittingly becomes embroiled in a dangerous bank robbery led by a gang of armed and violent criminals.
Trapped inside, Van Damme is framed for the robbery and the murder of innocent hostages. Now he must win the approval of the crowd as well as the trust of the police if he is to survive this deadly heist!

With a killer mix of action, murder, mayhem and no shortage of laughs JCVD delivers with the impact of a roundhouse kick to the face! Van Damme is back and this time he’s taking no prisoners!

''The biggest fight of his life'' proclaims the movie posters' all too sincere tagline and from the warts and all performance on display - they weren't kidding. With a craftily self titled movie and a director who understands the hollywood action movie machine, Jean Claude Van Damme's new film is an exceptionally well made production with superb acting and stylish direction combined with an engaging story and possibly one of the most stripped down and honest performances of the last few years... who knew it would come from a belgian guy mostly known for his high kicks, a string of direct to video actioners and tabloid bating substance abuse?

To begin, I am a big Van Damme fan. I know its not all that clever to admit that, but I have followed him since I was a young teen becoming enchanted by his dynamic action movies that always seemed to combine high octane balletics with a real desire to make something different within the genre (hence his insistence on bringing hong kong directors to the US) - granted, some of his movies have been less than favourable (Derailed, The Order, Second In Command, etc) but he has still delivered solid genre flicks in the form of Hard Target, In Hell and AWOL. However, after seeing this - the new film ''JCVD'', his industry perception as a one note action star may well be turned on its head...

The story has JC playing himself. He's a down on his luck, over the hill action movie star with money problems, an agent who cannot get him a decent gig and a public child custody battle which isn't going in his favour. Retreating to his home of Brussels, he is embroiled in a post office robbery where he is held hostage by a gang of crooks who are at first astounded by him, then cannily plan how his name can help them with their scheme.

4.0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly compelling 11 Mar 2009
The first thing to say is that this is not a Van Damme kick-em-up. It's an utterly compelling insight into the man himself through the medium of a post office robbery gone wrong. There is very little action, but if you've half a brain and a bit of an interest in the machinations of Hollywood and how it treats 'past it' stars, watch it.

The Bluray is super quality, sound and video excellent. It's perhaps not necessary to get this on BRD since it's quite a "small" film in its scale. Didn't watch any of the extras so can't comment on them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent 10 Mar 2009
This is a real return to form for Van Damme, a bit unusual for a Van Damme film as there is a lack of fighting, but the plot and story are brilliant. If you're a Van Damme fan you will love the extras, particually the Day with Van Damme and even if you're not you will be surprised by his acting skills, although he is essensially playing himself!

4.0 out of 5 stars Jean claude Van damme, Actor. 11 Feb 2009
The film opens with the filming of a faux movie, which is better than anything JCVD has done for real in years. What follows is not an action film but a character driven movie that gives him a chance to show his acting chops. And show them off he does. This is one of the most affecting films I have seen recently.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a great return! 2 Feb 2009
I've just seen JCVD at the Prince Charles cinema in London on it's small theatrical release and loved every second.

I must admit, I'm not a big fan of Jean-Claude, but I'd heard that this was different to his others films, so took a chance, and I'm so glad I did. From the hilarious opening one-take action sequence all the way through to it's great climax, JCVD is inspired film-making that shows Jean-Claude in a whole new light. Special mention to the inspired monologue section half way through the movie - moving stuff...

JCVD is a fantastic film that will please both fans and non-fans alike and I've now bought my DVD - heavily recommended..

I've seen actors getting Oscars for worst performances than the one Van Damme gives here.
JCVD is an unbelievable and unique movie exactely because no one was expecting to see something like this from a man who the world has not been respecting as an actor for decades now.
For my part, i'm never going to snob Van Damme ever again when it comes to acting.
It's very difficult to explain this here, because, really, there are no words to describe the work of Van Damme in this movie that could give you an idea of how good he is in portraing this JCVD character.
Ok, it's based on his own life, you say. So it doesn't count as good acting. WRONG.
Once again, if you've never seen a Van Damme movie in your life, or you were not planning to see more of his work ever again, i would reconsider and check this movie out.

Van Damme performance is trully special, and you finish this movie really caring for that person.
The premise of the movie is great; a beat up has-been action star, bankrupt and with tons of personal problems goes back to his country and then one day when he goes to cash a check he ends up being the more valuable hostage when the robbers recognize him as the Van Damme of such movies like Bloodsport and insist on him to act like he does in the movies but in real life.

Strangely enough, altough the movie delivers some great jokes and laugh moments, it's not exactely a comedy, but a very intimistic movie about a man who once was a big hollywood star but despite of that never was taken serious as an actor.
Well, after you see JCVD you will. And I sicerely hope JCVD is going to be an open door for a new movie carreer for Van Damme because this performance is simply fascinating.
