Jazzoo and The Wild Men is an action-packed adventure in which Jazzoo sets out from his Stone Age woodland settlement to find his real father and reunite his parents. The author's knowledge of the natural world and its varying landscapes is very impressive, as is his creation of the golden city Ammarucath. He paints an equally vivid picture of Stone Age Warfare, and his main characters are well-drawn and convincing.
The sensitive Jazzoo grows up very quickly as he encounters danger, savagery, and love. He has to come to terms with people whose values are very different to his own, as he is imprisoned and tortured in the land of Ucar. Later when he meets Farring the great Siarran leader, a man close to nature, he realises that there are those equally appalled by barbarism. Civilization is alive and well among the people of the Water and in other areas. This is an excellent book which has something for everyone. Highly recommended.
