Product Description

After rhyming over Premier's doctored jazz beats in Gang Starr, Guru decided to take it to the next level, employing the talents of actual jazz musicians to create the grooves over which he would flow. Coming off like a jazzier extension of the Brand New Heavies' Heavy Rhyme Experience: Vol.1, Jazzmatazz, Vol. 1 brought together a diverse group of jazz cats both old-school and new, including Roy Ayers, Donald Byrd, Lonnie Liston Smith, Ronny Jordan, and Courtney Pine. Guru even enlisted the serene pipes of Carleen Anderson and N'Dea Davenport and acted as something of an international hip-hop ambassador when he flipped "Le Bien, Le Mal" with French mic pro MC Solaar. From the Blue Note-style cover art to the hepcat spoken-word intro, this package is pure hip-hop jazz music. Jazz purists may wish to note that the grooves lean heavily toward the funkier 1970s era of jazz, and hardcore hip-hop heads my be turned off by the mellower musical stance. But then again, this is neither pure jazz nor hardcore hip-hop but rather an extension of the two. --Spence Abbott

5.0 out of 5 stars THIS IS THE COOL! 10 Jan 2000

As an 'old school' hip-hop head this album had to be good,Anything less and it would get binned! To say I was blown away would be an understatment! I have always rated Guru as a lyrycist but combined with some of the finest Jazz & vocal talents ever to have graced this earth there could only be one outcome,....BUY IT!! You will never regret it!

This is a must have album for all hip hop fans, Guru (gifted unlimited rhymes universal) has met up with stars like Donald Byrd and MC Solaar to create a unique style. With hip hop drum beats, jazz riffs, and chilled out raps, this album is perfect for when you're in the mood for hip hop, but without all the heavy bass lines, just put this album on and relax.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great laid back hip-hop 28 Oct 2001
Format:Audio CD
I would recommend this CD for fans of real hip-hop (Tribe Called Quest, Mos Def, De La Soul, Gang Starr). Guru's lyricts sound great with the jazz sound. I have to say that this blows the current commercial rubbish away. Jay-Z, D-12, P-Diddy are streets behind this stuff. This sounds a bit like Gang Starr, but the Jazz style just makes it that bit different.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything about this is class! 28 Mar 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I very nearly opted for the MP3 download only on this and I'm so glad I didn't and instead went for the old fashioned CD... What you get with that CD is the booklet that comes with the album including notes on the production process, write-ups on the artists involved and a really nice piece penned by GURU on what motivated him to create the album in the first place.. That alone as well as the fantastic music and lyrics makes this a very special piece of work.. Has to be up there with albums like Blue Lines & some of Soul to Soul's best in my opinion... Quite simply, a classic!

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible! 8 Feb 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
An unbelievable fusion of Jazz and Hip-hop genres, does exactly what it says on the tin! Heard this at a mate's house and it blew my mind. Bought it straightaway on Amazon and definitely a worthwhile purchase. As a linguist, it was a pleasant surprise to hear some French Hip-hop from MC Solaar!
