I know this is meant to be a review of the album, but I saw Abram and the band live yesterday, and wow! It was utterly fantastic.
The band played 13 of the songs from Jazz Warrior. The style of the album is a mixture of traditional jazz, intermingled with hip-hop, soul, funk, vocal and even a touch of bop. The band is headed by Abram on the trumpet, who's sharp, biting melodies really catch your attention.
The whole band meld very well, and while I haven't heard the album, considering the simply stunning live performance I heard, I'm assuming the album will be just as much as it promises to be.

All I can say is that it is worth every penny of the £. God this man's trumpet, let alone his vocals make you wanna marry him. Sorry gentleman. Okay here comes the science! His trumpet playing is worth listening to as it not only does it speak to your ears but right through the depth of your soul. His vocals switch skilfully from a soul feel to a quick hip hop style with smoothness only he seems able to master fusing it into something totally new. A truly talented young man, with plenty to offer booth the jazz, and neo soul genre for a very long time to come. Anyway definitely BUY THIS CD.

How refreshing it is to young jazz fans like myself to hear a young black trumpeter enthusing (via his playing) the continuing evolution of bop. Mixes in with a few Jazz-pop settings and some great soloing. To my mind the highlight is Pedal Herlin, a rhythmic hard groove which has me transfixed from start to finish. It seems to fuse hard bop with funk techniques and grooves here and there. I can't recommend this album highly enough, especially if you've ever seen Abram Wilson playing with the Soweto Kinch band. This album absolutely screams for a live tour of the UK...please Mr. Wilson, if you're reading this....

In searching the websites for info on Abram. I was fortunate to come across photographs and a review recently regarding a performance late last year. I had heard of Abram prior to this review, but this further helped me to make up my mind, plus the positive reviews by dedicated amazon viewers. An excellent jazzy, funky debut. I fully agree with michael valentine studio and other reviews. Abram Wilson has done a great job in fusing many genres here.
