Product Description

In 1958, celebrated photographer Bert Stern was inspired by a friend to "take some pictures" of the Newport Jazz Festival. Following a turn of events, Stern decided to produce a full fledged motion picture. It would become his only film. By breaking many cinematic taboos, Stern recreated the look of his still photography into motion with a dazzling display of rich human observation and some of the most remarkable scenes of live jazz ever brought to the screen. When it premiered at the Venice film Festival rumours of an American " New Wave" swirled. Although the principle emphasis of JAZZ ON A SUMMER'S DAY is on the performance of such legendary artists as Louis Armstrong, Anita O'Day, Mahalia Jackson, and Thelonious Monk, Stern's camera also fills us with illuminating images of America at its best. Whether it's a birds eye view of the rich in their yachts or young from Booklyn on a tour of Newport's picturesque streets and beaches, this is more than just a jazz film, it's the film of an era.PAL-REGION 0

I bunked off school to see this when it was first released; many, many years ago. I bought the CD to see if what I remembered was real; it was, and it's an extraordinary display of late 50's liberal attitudes, interests ...and jazz. From the first shimmering 'Train and the River' by Jimmy Guiffre, to 'The Lord's Prayer' by Mahalia Jackson, it's all still there, beautifully photographed, well recorded, and exquisitely edited.
I always wondered what 'Nashville' reminded me of; now I know, but I like the jazz version better!

I'd seen it only once since the early sixties, when you either loved or hated its polish. Apart from the occasional brick dropped ( for example cutting yacht racing complete with radio commentary over Thelonius Monk - obviously too far out for the target audience - and the extraordinary Dinah Washington sequence) it stands up pretty well, and the polish is still rock hard and dazzling, though it's gained a halo of nostalgia in spite of itself. For me the title sequence with Giuffre, Brookmeyer and Hall and the Bach prelude are the best bits. Was this really how Eisenhower's America saw itself?

I own a different edition of the film ( Jazz On A Summer's Day [DVD] [1958] [NTSC] ), so I just wanted to say this is a great jazz documentary, with Dinah Washington swinging madly with Terry Gibbs (even joining him for a ride with hot mallets), with the incredible Anita O'Day singing exuisitly (and, oh, so hip), with Louis Armstrong and Jack Teagarden working beautifully together, with some fine cool jazz (Jimmy Giuffree, Bob Brookmeyer, Jim Hall), with Mahalia Jackson charming and charismatic as ever (and shy as a young girl when receiving a well deserved applaus...)...
There's also the blues women Big Maybelle, Thelonious Monk (albeit interrupted by the "documentary" material of yacht races) and lots of other attractions, for instance Chuck Berry rocking and rolling with a jazzers backing him up...
My copy of the film is magnificent (although the gratiutous CD that came with it was faulty, skipping on the second half). I hope this edition is as great.
