The concert here was filmed over 2 days and nights and obviously due to contractual restrictions and time limitations, many of the artists could not make the final cut. The liner notes to this excellent package tell us that 130,000 feet of film were shot but only 8,000 made it to the screen. Well.. maybe one day...

This is not really a documentary nor a complete concert film. It is.. a moment in time caught unguarded. The real 1950s. People and beatniks (look for Gregory Corso in the audience) in their Ray-Bans digging the vibe of a beautiful sunny day such a long, long time ago. By the time Mahalia Jackson closed the show late in the evening it was raining steadily but that didn't seem to dampen spirits.

So okay.. why only 4 stars? Well, I was very disappointed in the quality of the dvd image. The movie was shot on 35mm Kodak film and I was hoping for a brighter, more vibrant picture. I love this movie and have seen it many times. Since it is of cultural and historical significance it begs for remastering onto Blu-Ray. For some reason (call it false intuition) I thought that this copy of the movie from Charly would be the best so far. As it turned out, the image is probably not as good as my original dvd. The problem is HD television sets. I am fortunate to have an "as new" old style analogue picture tube television and the dvd looks a lot better on that unit although the colours still seem a little murky.. but here's the kicker: The dvd has a few extra features and, in the interview with director Bert Stern, clips of the movie are shown in a much better quality than the full feature film. So there is work to be done. This movie is a treasure and it needs a refurbishing.

The cd is the soundtrack of the movie with most of the talking removed.

The DVD is okay as a historical document but most people are not going to want to watch this more than a couple of times. The CD however, is not going to appeal to serious Jazz fans as it offers very little in the way of musical highlights, in fact, I would go as far as to say that anyone who is not yet a fan of this music will not be tempted to investigate it much further once they have listened to this. The problem with the CD is that not only does it contain fairly mundane versions of songs that are not improved by being "jazzed up" but the audience applause has not been sufficiently edited for modern tastes.

The other review for this recording relates to another CD altogether. This one is a recording of the Newport Jazz Festival of 1958. Some legendary acts on their top form. This is pure first class entertainment. The DVD captures the atmosphere of this summer's days jazz in the 50s. Just wish I'd been there.
