A cool horn!,

This review is from: Jazz Method for Trumpet (Tutor Book & CD) (Paperback)
This is one in a series, the other two I am aware of being Jazz Method for Tenor and Alto Saxophone. I have given these tutor books the highest rating because John O'Neill has done the nigh impossible and produced books that really are a wonderfully inspiring and comprehensive introduction to the world of jazz for outright beginners who would really like to pick up and play the instrument in question, but in the jazz idiom rather than in that cross between folk, hymn, traditional airs and light classical styles that most tutor books employ. There's nothing wrong at all about the approach of other tutor books, just that aspiring jazz players like me would have to re-learn rather than being able to just get on with jazz from the outset.
The Jazz Method approaches the task in an orderly manner, introducing the student to the various fingerings of the instrument, interspersed with short musical pieces, some of which are specially written for the series - in fact the books use a lot of the same pieces across the instruments, but are none the worse for that. There is the added bonus of a loose insert with each tutor book that lays out the chord progressions of each piece so that the teacher can accompany the pupil on the piano or guitar. Another admirable feature of the books is the way that O'Neill regularly suggests various recordings by famous artists of the instrument so that pupils can develop a knowledge of the different styles and sounds possible on the instrument which hopefully will eventually enable them to find their own "voice". The books are so well presented that a student can study on their own, assuming they can deal with the basic first principles of how to actually get musical sounds from the instrument, but that approach would most suit the mature/adult pupil - I think the typical young player/starter would get most out of these books under the guidance of a teacher.

An Excellent Starting Point For The New Jazz Player,
By A Customer
This review is from: Jazz Method for Trumpet (Tutor Book & CD) (Paperback)
I was recommended this book by my tutor, due to the fact that I love to play jazz. The book it self will work for Advanced players as well as these who are just starting with the trumpet, it covers the very basics of playing the instrument right through to the more advanced aspects of the use of mutes. The level of playing increases as you work through the book, and a CD accompanys all the scores, ranging from famous pieces, improvisation, to basic scales. An excellent choice to buy.

Jazz method for Trumpet,

This review is from: Jazz Method for Trumpet (Tutor Book & CD) (Paperback)
I bought this book for my nephew who is a keen trumpeter grade 6 and jazz grade 5 standard. He was delighted to receive it as he had done a work shop with Steve Waterman. He said the book is just like having a teacher but in a book! He said he feels like a beginner from an improvising point of view and it has really helped him. He said he did not know how to double tongue but has now learn this method, he said it is a very good book.
