A masterpiece-Pet Shop Boy's best album yet!,

They are back.After a long wait the boys are back with their most complete and mature work ever-a brilliant mixture of dance tunes and slow magnificent songs makes "Nightlife" a masterpiece. The CD kicks off with "For Your Own Good",a Faithless style(Rollo produced)dance tune-perfect.The 2nd track is a Bee Gees 70s style track "Closer To Heaven"-brilliant.Next is the hit single "I don't know what you want but i can't give it anymore"-out of this world. The 4th song is the first of the two weak links-"Happiness is an option" just slows the tempo down,so skip it to the the godly "ballad" "You only tell me you love me when you're drunk"-what wonderful music.Next up is the 2nd and last weak link-"Vampires"-a rather boring song with uncharacteristiclly disappointing lyrics. Now we can really kick off-"Radiophonic" puts the tempo back with it's irresistble rhythm and then we have 3 stunning quiet songs:"The Only One" is good,but it's just a warm up the best song on the CD "Boy Strange"-brilliant lyrics,brilliant music.Incredibly the next song is virtually in the same class,a classy duet with Kylie Minogue, a potential hit(it's in the same class as Kylie's duet with Nick Cave "Where the wild roses grow". Time for the 2nd single "New York City Boy",a Village People/Go West style hit-not one of the best songs here,but a cute hit.Time to end with "Footsteps",another haunting ballad. All in all,a complete record-brilliant.Buy it for the sake and the future of good pop music.

A Relentless Nightlife,

Pop music is in a sorry state - no arguments there. However, there is one exception to this rule and that comes in the shape of Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe - Pet Shop Boys.Nightlife is one of (if not) the Pet's most consistent album. The first 8 tracks stand out alongside the best work they have produced. Vampires is a brilliant, moody tale. Radiophonic is euphoric and dreamy. For Your Own Good is a powerful, contemporary stomper. Those who say Pet Shop Boys were just an 80's act obviously haven't even tried to listen their 90's output - it's just as crucial and magnificent. Let us not forget, Very (1993) was their only UK #1 album (to date) and rightly so. 15 years on and time has improved them. If they continue to produce material such as this, then perhaps in years to come, we can actually be proud of popular music.

Shimmering pop to show the elders do it best.,

While Pet Shop Boys have been away it would appear that the mice will play, as quality escapes from the pop charts like a dying balloon Neil and Chris are back to show that even at their weakest (on the last track of this album, footsteps) they write songs that other artists do not even get to see from their highly paid song writers. The album walks the night, from the high of club to the low of the Sunday comedown and the harsh realities revealed in the brightness of dawn. The opener begins with the turbo driven trance courtesy of Faithless and the next adds a guitar line into which you may wallow for days. Then the single 'I don't know what I want...', which sounds as though it has been with us for always. One of the highlights is, the next single, you only say you love me when you're drunk, in which the lushness of orchestration hides a bitter and spitting truth. Other highlights are Vampires, a slowly piano led, synthesied trawl through dark club interiors, and the duet with kylie, of which the string opening is enough to make you happy to have lived long enough to hear it, and of course the single NewYork City BOy, a number one which never was. Although not as good as previous work, particulary the akward Bi-lingual and the pure untouched majesty of Behaviour Nightlife is a welcome and desperately needed return in a time where pop music has slithered to an all time low of nameless, faceless and tuneless boybands providing software for sony hifi.
