Dave Brubeck was one of the most active and popular musicians in both the jazz and classical worlds. With a career that spanned over six decades, his experiments in odd time signatures, improvised counterpoint, polyrhythm and polytonality remain hallmarks of innovation.

Born into a musical family in Concord, California-- his two older brothers were also professional musicians--he began ... Read more in Amazon's Dave Brubeck Store

5.0 out of 5 stars 68 minutes of classic Brubeck 10 Oct 2012
By adrian
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I bought the EP of this 1957 concert many years ago which contained two tracks, St Louis Blues and The Masquerade Is Over and I have been waiting for the full CD to appear for a long time.
It is from one of the DBQ college concerts which was a Brubeck speciality at the time, with the line up of: Brubeck, Paul Desmond, Norman Bates and Joe Morello.
The track listings are:
Bru's blues
These foolish things
The masquerade is over
One moment worth years
St Louis blues
There are two bonus tracks which come from an earlier 1954 date with Joe Dodge replacing Joe Morello on drums:
At the perfume counter (15' 02' long)
The listings on a previous review by Numinous Ugo are not what I got and I bought the CD from Amazon.
To come to the music, it is inspired, full of vitality and you catch the rapport between the audience and the musicians. Desmond is at his finest and he must surely be one of the finest altoists ever. Although he was very popular as a result of his partnership with Brubeck, sometimes he did not receive full credit simply because he was so popular.
This is an essential purchase for Brubeck fans and well worth buying for modern jazz fans in general.
A welcome addition to the catalogue and well worth the wait. It may not necessarily be earth shattering music, but it is a pleasant listen, with fine musicianship and highly recommended by me! Don't miss it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Finally 13 Mar 2012
Format:Audio CD
Well I was one of the lucky few who previously had this on CD, a Japanese import that a friend of mine picked up for me in Poland. This new remasterd version is much clearer and has been cleaned up. It sounds much better than the unmastered CD. There is however an amount of fuzzy shadowy hissy distortion on the instruments on track 1 in places - particularly round 4 minutes 40. All in all it's great to see this CD released so people can buy it rather than the same old selections. Brus Blus is one of the great Brubeck tracks and a departure from the usual routine it was ridiculous that it wasn't available before now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jazz started for me 'round 'bout this release 15 Jun 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
When I first was attracted to our music, a chance hearing of Art Tatum, then Oscar Peterson, I was just starting grammar school.
Visiting Windows Record Shop within the Arcade at Newcastle upon Tyne, the covers of albums held almost unimaginable pleasure.
Although this particular was never mine in the fifties, I've never forgotten it. Anne-Marie, my soulmate of long standing, bought for a recent birthday, I'm far from disappointed by it, it for me brings back ghosts, some achingly beautiful, others forgettable, that's what jazz does, I guess all music does that, come to think of it.

Superb. 'Stardust', if nothing else on the disc, is worth the wait.

Thanks, Bru', for the elapsed time, well, it feels I've never been away.

Love, peace,

Dr. Ivan Clark
