This is an essential in any collection of Bechet. The main attraction is in tracks 5 to 12 where Bechet plays with his orchestra or the New Orleans Feetwarmers ~ both small groups with Bechet's sax forming the front line and Kenny Clark on drums. Here, particularly in "Wrap your troubles in dreams" and "It had to be you", the beauty of Bechet's lyrical sax is out in the open. And it swings like mad. I had searched for these for years. I first heard them on a friend's 10 inch LP and, together with his recordings with Mezzrow, I consider that they represent some of his best work.

Tracks 1 to 4, with Claude Luter and his orchestra, are rescued by Bechet's interjections but although the rest (Tracks 13 to 18) jog along cheerfully without him they are little better than Mickey Mouse music. However, don't let that put you off. Tracks 5 to 12 are pure gold.

for those who have never heard of sidney bechet, where have you been hiding ? and worse, you've never heard him play. i'll just tell you this until bechet the soprano sax was something of a joke, he was and always will be it's greatest exponent.standout tracks for me are ALL the slow ones ( you really get the feeling of bechet)but that's just me!if you love jazz you'll love this cd.
