Herman Leonard was habitually in the right place at the right time. His candid photography captured the spirit, the cool and the dedication of an extraordinary array of all-time jazz greats. This is a big book in every sense: a hefty volume, an important document and a magnificent portfolio of work that will give lasting pleasure.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful By Tony Baldaro on 21 Jan. 2011
Format: Hardcover
A truly wonderful book, Herman Leonard's photographs have been presented with great care thanks to the designers at Carr Studios. The origination and printing is excellent; all bar two of the black and white photographs sit on a blemish free solid black background.

To see so many of Leonard's images in one volume is something to treasure. Like the music, they cover a great deal; the lasting impression is one of joy.

I first saw this book in a hotel restaurant in Tokyo (they are very keen on early modern jazz there) and was knocked out by it and wondered how to get it for a reasonable price. Shortly after returning to England I found the book on Amazon and bought it, I could sit and look throught it for hours, preferably while listening to Miles or Bird.
