As in Bill the Cat's USA review, I would echo all that Bill has said about this book. It is not "advanced" but it is also challenging for those who are not (like me) good sight readers. One thing that Bill did not mention and yet is important (if like me) what most messes with your sight reading is poor time keeping - is that a CD is available for this book - and which includes the duet songs too. The CD can be ordered through Amazon - just type in "CD for Jazz Guitar sight reading" and you'll get options for purchase (American option is by far the cheapest).

A much needed addition to jazz guitar pedagogy 5 Aug. 2012

After having spent the past year playing in a college level jazz band, I can tell you that the ability to read staff notation is everything. You must be able to read charts (chord changes) and voice chords smoothly in the rhythm section. However, you will also be required to play single lines with the sax section, and when that happens, you must be ready with your single-line reading chops. This book will give you a shove in the right direction, but it's not the whole enchilada by any measure. I liked the first ten pages enormously, since they are examples of blues heads in various keys. Prepare to be surprised by them. The following material mimics jazz standards admirably, but again, they're just a point of departure. After you read through this book, get "Jazz Conception for Saxophone" by Lennie Niehaus in four volumes. There, you can really test your chops. But "Jazz Guitar Sight-Reading" is a good place to get started. (By the way, ten guys auditioned for the band I'm in, and the reason that seven of them didn't make the cut is because they couldn't read "Amazing Grace" in whole notes.)
