I used this book almost twenty years ago and liked it. Since I recently started teaching in a primary school, I was looking for some way to vary what I offer them and remembered the Jazz Chants. They still work great and I was surprised after the holiday break that when I mentioned "sock" the second graders spontaneously broke into "shoes and socks! Shoes and socks!" The rhythm makes the chants easy to remember and gives the children a natural intonation that is often difficult for French speakers to pick up.

Carolyn Graham has really created something useful for teachers of English as a foreign language. The kids just love the chants and I myself find most of them really catchy. These jazz chants enable the pupils to acquire many automatisms in English which in turn make them feel confident to learn more.

Found this great for rhythm in teaching English to children in Mongolia. Have also used it in my special needs teaching.

My kids in class LOVED these chants and were always ready to learn more. I had tryed everything in my ESL classes to get my youngest ones to speak more. These chants gave them confidence and FUN. This material can be used with any program and will add lots of spice!

Have Been Using This for Decades! 10 April 2012

I've been using Carolyn Graham's jazz chants for decades! I pick and choose which ones to use, depending on the grammar and rhythm I want to teach. Perfect for ESL students of course, and her teacher's edition outlines for you the grammar and structures to reinforce in later language lessons. I made some hands-on materials to go with them--we have a blast practicing these rhymes. I use select poems with professional adults, as well---they provide perfect ways to practice pronunciation, intonation, pausing, grammar. Her stuff endures!

Songs That Stay With You...and Don't Go Away 11 April 2000
By "briantheopinionatedone" - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Jazz Chants for Children's content stays with you for a long time. It simply does not go away. A person could be walking down the street, then suddenly start singing..."Shh, shh, baby's sleeping." They're good tools for teaching ESL, but the content of the chants would drive an English speaker insane. Although many of the chants are happy and cheerful, many of them seem hostile. When purchasing for your child, use caution.

Negative, hostile songs 4 July 2005

While a few of the chants have catchy melodies, listening to children chanting, "I don't like him," "My socks don't match," and "I'm mad at you" gets old fast. I would prefer something much more positive sounding.
