Review

A scintillating omnium gathering of jazz talk. (Washington Post )

Guarantees up to a thousand laughs...recommended without reservation. (Los Angeles Times )

The intense sociological hothouse that was the jazz and commercial music world has cooled down greatly over the years, but it's important to have books like this to remind us how exciting and invigorating those days were....Don't let it slip by. (Allegro )

Read this somewhere where you're not afraid to be seen laughing out loud....Everyone should be able to find something to like in this rich collection. (Library Journal ) --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

A anthology of famous jazz musicians, their lifestyles and favourite stories. A book you will have to put down and pick up again. I laughed until my sides hurt.

I quite enjoyed this book there are some interesting as well as funny anecdotes but there are also quite a few pretty average stories - perhaps a plum on every other page...

Through this original and vastly entertaining collection,Bill Crow gives an insight into the unique lifestyles of the musicians who were responsible for the very creation of jazz.A way of life so freewheeling as to be at times hilarious, also led to scenes of considerable poignancy as drugs and alcohol took their (depressingly) inevitable toll - for the most part, though,Mr.Crow gives us wonderful fragments containing the musicians' recollections on the nature of life on the road. All the greats are included - Armstrong,Ellington,Miles,Ella etc etc, as well an array of lesser known but important characters who helped shape the music.By turns fascinating and side-splittingly funny, this is absolutely essential reading for anyone interested in the joyous and unique sound that is jazz.
