Sound explained

Sound pressure, decibel and Hz

Sound is an invisible vibration composed of frequencies which travel in undulations known as sound waves. The amplitude of vibration produced by an object such as a speaker driver is proportional to the change of pressure generated as the wave moves through the medium which surrounds it (such as air). Therefore, the amplitude of a sound wave is commonly measured by its pressure level.

The decibel is a non-dimensional, logarithmic scale to denote a relative change in the strength of a signal or wave. When placed in the context of sound pressure level; it measures the nominal threshold of human hearing, relative to the quietest sound audible to the human ear.

The frequency of instances where a sound wave reaches its peak during a period of time is measured in Hz (hertz). This is the number of complete cycles per second. Human hearing is limited to frequencies between about 20 Hz and 20,000 Hz.

Sensitivity and impedance

Earphone sensitivity is measured in Sound Pressure Level (SPL). This is essentially a measurement of how loud or easily driven a pair of earphones is. The sensitivity is also influenced by the drivers’ coil impedance which varies over the frequency range. The higher the SPL and the lower the impedance the more easily driven your earphones will be.

5.0 out of 5 stars Oustanding! 15 Mar 2011

I purchased these earphones to replace damaged Sennheiser CX-500's. Quite simply a massive step up in build quality and sound. The earphones are packaged really well and the ear bud selection great - Its nice to finally have buds that fit perfectly! The flat wires ensure no twisting/tangling. The sound quality is amazing, a notable difference from the Sennheiser. Maybe not quite a mega bassy as the CX-500's, but the all round quality means you do not miss this at all. I have owned Sennheiser CX-300 and CX-500's and thought they were good, but these a-JAYS are notably better in every aspect. This will be the best 30.00 you will ever spend on earphones, so dont worry - buy and ENJOY!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Top Quality Headphones 2 Mar 2011
By Shivers
I had been scouring the internet in search of an affordable, well-built, great quality, good looking set of headphones. Then I saw these. Immediately I said 'Yes.'

However, I was put in the predicament of whether to buy these headphones or the other numerous models that the JAYS manufacturer has to offer. There are four different models of a-jays (one, two, three and four), not to mention the more expensive other models. I could see from first glance that JAYS were very specialised and I was right.

The professional build quality/packaging and appearance is the first thing that hits you. Immediately you are impressed by a professional look and can't help but think that JAYS know what they are doing.

Once you open it up, they offer 5 different sizes of earbuds (XS, S, M, L, XL), so you are guaranteed to find some that fit and stay in comfortably. The cable attached to them is flat and wide so it doesn't tangle, believe me I have put this to the test many times, and I can honestly say that they unravel in a matter of seconds regardless of how scrunched up they are. The tangle-free cable was definitely a unique and nice touch.

The sound quality is, very very good. The headphones have a big depth and a strong bassline, but as well as this they also hit the high notes with a tender grace. All round, the sound is very well balanced and they are extremely enjoyable to listen to (from heavy Dubstep dance music to light classical guitar).

Overall, they are an excellent pair of headphones with brilliant a sound, look, quality, comfort and style. If you are willing to pay the 30 price tag, they are a definite buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars beautiful and bassFULL 21 May 2011
By amby
I was attracted to this earphone mainly because of the flat cables, i have had many cables tangle i did not want anymore of that trouble.
So i decided to buy a set of these.
i went through reviews prior to purchasing them and the main complaint was not about the sound but the buds and how well they fit in the ear, many complained its slipped off the ear. I found this true with the buds that came with the earphones, when i did find a right fit, that was solved.

Positives:
-If you love BASS, this earphones comes packed with a lot of it.
-I haven't used it for long periods at high volumes, but to the best of my knowledge the sound does not get distorted at high volumes.
-At the volume i use it, the sound does not tire my ears.
-the build quality of the earphones is a thing of envy
-the flat cables are awesome: hence no cable tangling.
-In addition to the buds that come with the earphones, you also have an extra 4buds, so you're bound to find a fit for your ears.
-Contrary to some complaints about the earphones, they're pretty comfy (that is when you find a pair of buds that fit right).
-It comes with a 2year manufacturer warranty (tells you its very durable).

Cons:
-The cable may be a bit too long for some.
-it takes some patience to get a right fit for your ear (even the right fit was uncomfortable in my ears for about 2days)
-the jack may be a bit long for others too, its about twice the size of my other earphone.

Summary:
I am not an audiophile, for the money i spent and the value i got, i am more than satisfied.
of course sound-wise its not going to blow you away as theyre many more expensive earphones that provide better sounds.

If you have 30quid to spend, and flat cables appeal to you, i will recommend these.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb... 9 April 2011
By Lizzie VINE VOICE

I purchased these a-Jay Two earphones after my Bose earphones went belly up! I'd only had the Bose for just over a year and they had had no abuse. As you can imagine, I was reluctant to pay good money for an identical pair.

I've always been fussy about earphones. I have about half a dozen rejected ones languishing in a drawer somewhere. I'm no expert, but I like them to be comfortable and produce a good range of tones from my music. After reading the reviews for these a-Jays and reading that earphones is their speciality, I decided to take the plunge, and I'm so glad I did.

These are extremely comfortable and come with five pairs of different sizes of buds, so they fit perfectly. It is a bit fiddlely changing them around, but it is worth it to get the right size for your ears. They also came with an in flight adapter and a stereo splitter, neither of which I will use, but some people could find these useful and it is good value that these are thrown in with the a-Jay Twos.

I was delighted with the sound quality immediately and find I don't have to have the volume as loud. (I'd say this has something to do with the snug fit and the fact that these are noise insulating earphones). The sound is rich and deep and my music sounds better than ever.

Please note though, there were a couple of other reviews for a-Jay earphones saying that they kept falling out of the ear. It is important that these are inserted correctly. As said before, they are noise insulating earphones and need to be inserted into the ear canal. If you pull your ear out and up slightly when inserting them, they are safe and secure. Just practice a few times and you will be rewarded.

All in all, excellent value, and better than Bose!!!
