This was a great read about one of Rangers greatest ever defenders....especially if you went to the games when Tom was playing in light blue...brings back great memories.......when he mentions the European Cup tie against St Etienne ,he modestly forgets to mention how he stopped attack after attack from the French champions as the Gers went all guns blazing for goals and were getting caught time and time again on the counter attack...Big Tam was magnificent that night even although we lost...........thanks for the memories Tam

As a teenager and a Rangers fan during the 70's, both Tom Forsyth and Peter McLoy were my heroes! I used to attend the 'Gers home games, always propped against the tunnel wall, behind the Away team dug out (in these days, you could still hang over the tunnel wall and still stand on the terracing!). From my vantage point, not only could you smell the linament wafting down the tunnel, but you had the perfect position to view your heroes, and the villains (anyone remember Chic McLelland?) as they ran onto the pitch! So, to say I was looking forward to this book is an understatment! However, I have to say that I was a little underwhelmed by the content. I think Tom's editor could have been a little more demanding in regard to the story Tom had to tell. The thing is, Tom's a bit economical with the detail! He touches on various areas of his career, but rarely does he do more than give us the veneer! There's rarely any juicy context to his tales. He describes the attributes of various players, but never gives us a 'for examlple', to contextualise why he's described them in these terms; perhaps he assumes readers will know? It's just that, being outsiders, the readers are looking for Tom to give them the little juicy details that we couldn't work out for ourselves? So we know that Colin Jackson had a thick Aberdeen accent, but we get no funny anecdote to illuminate this detail; we learn that Tom thought Derek Johnstone was lazy; he also thought Davie Cooper was lazy, but gifted...but again, no great detail about either player, or perhaps how widely they were viewed as lazy? By peers, management etc? Who knows...not the reader at any rate...c'mon Tom's editor, why did you not press for more detail?Read more ›

An enjoyable book about one of my all time favourite Rangers players.
Big Tam spoke with honesty and great modesty about his career.

The 70's was a time when the job title 'defender' really meant something and Tom Forsyth lived for his football. He was a hard man on the pitch and a gentle giant off it. This book offers a real insight into the world of Scottish Football in the 70's and 80's. It wasn't a particularly glamorous time and we get Big Tam's account of the 78 World Cup debacle. Albeit that time seems to have coloured his memory a bit and he could have revealed a bit more of the 'goings on'. Still he is a genuine Rangers Legend, a much overused term, but in his case well deserved. If you love your football it is worth a read but don't expect too much controversy more a fond recollection of fitba before the millionaire prima donnas arrived.
