5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best Bluetooth headsets available today, 6 Oct 2008
By John Nunn (Coventry, U.K.) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This is perhaps the best Bluetooth headset on the market today. The noise-cancelling technology actually works, which was a great surprise as this is a feature I have often found to be woefully under par in other products. As well as being fully functional the device is incredible comfortable to wear, I wear glasses as well which often makes behind the ear devices difficult and uncomfortable to wear.

The included USB charger makes recharging this device so easy, it would have been so difficult otherwise as the included mains charger only had a US style plug.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good rather than perfect, 2 Oct 2008
By Mr. P. A. Busby (SE UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The Aliph Jawbone II is a departure for me - I've always bought Ericsson then Sony Ericsson phones & BT headsets (same charger for both) but had trouble with the last one so got this to replace it.

The Jawbone II is supposedly at the top of the tree regarding noise cancellation. I can confirm that this aspect is amazingly good & can be switched off during a call where the difference it makes is remarkable. I've only had this headset a few days but voice activated dialling from my Sony Ericsson W890i not only works well but does so under noisy conditions which leaves other headsets floundering. The device has a rubber button that's designed to be in contact with one's face (hence the name) that the maker's calls a Voice Activity Sensor to aid noise cancellation.

The device's outer appearance when worn is very simple - an oblong profile that curves gently from the front to a tighter curve at the back when viewed from above with a raised diamond pattern, the other curvy surfaces are glossy black. It comes with a grey charger that the supplied USB charging lead plugs into so can be charged from a USB port - a second USB lead would enable charging in two locations but is omitted as is a carrying pouch or means of attaching a neck strap.

This headset has two controls rather than buttons. The outer shell flexes near the slit that covers the flashing red or white LED to switch on or off/Answer/end call/LED off (Talk Button) & the voice activation/NoiseAssassin on-off/last number redial call reject/volume cycle (NoiseAssissin Button) is used by pressing on the rear end of the shell. When switched on for the first time after a one hour charge, it goes into pairing mode that requires 0000 be entered as the PIN on the phone. Very simple to pair & can be initiated manually by activating both controls until the LED flashes red then white. Aliph's website implies that the headset can be paired to more than one device at a time. Other colours are available.

The headset is supplied with a medium & large earloop both in rubber covered wire or slim black leather that rotate forwards when not in use & three sizes of earbud - this device plugs into your ear rather than resting on it so if you know you don't get along with this style (I'm not sure I do yet) - look elsewhere. Some will find using it with the earloop removed possible; it only weighs 10g.

The LED will flash white briefly every eight seconds when in range, red every three when out of range & every six when the battery is low. It will automatically reconnect when back in range or switch off completely after a while if it remains out of range. I'm not sure how many BT headsets reconnect like this but my previous ones didn't - I find this function very welcome. The way the volume is adjusted is fiddly: it's done by pressing the rear control to cycle through the levels during a call - not the most user-friendly method. The device has an advertised standby time of eight days & talk time of four hours. The packaging reflects the price!

The good:
Great sound quality & intelligibility
Tiny & jewel-like, exudes quality
The noise cancelling works extremely well
Voice activation works better than it has any right to even with some background noise
Last number redial
Automatic reconnection when back in range
Can be paired with more than one device

The less good:
Clumsy volume adjustment
Ear canal fitting won't suit everyone
Not that robust - I've already bent the earloop back into shape where it exits the headset
Very easy to terminate a call when pushing/pushing back into ear until familiar with it
Not cheap & no means of carrying the device is supplied

Conclusion:
Not perfect but the good outweighs the bad by a long way!

1.0 out of 5 stars Is my ear non standard - coz I can't get this to fit!, 9 Jul 2009
By S. Getty (Belfast) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I generally don't review products but I think in this instance I am compelled to - due to my disappointment with the product.

When it arrives you probably be very impressed by the packaging - its fantastic - a waste of time and effort in my opinion. Other reviewers here have gone to great lengths to review this product and spent 80% of their time talking about the packaging - they're missing the point.

It should be about the product - not the box. The box - goes in the bin - or recycling - or kept if you want to re-sell the item - which is exactly what I am going to do.

I had great expectations for this headset. 90% of the reviews rate it as a great product and the Aliph sales material will do a great job of seducing you into purchase with all the talk about military grade sound and noise cancelling performance. And in this respect they do not lie. IF you manage to get this headset to stay on your ear - which you probably won't, you will find the sound quality to be excellent. IF you manage to get the little rubber/plastic stud, (which is absolutely necessary for the noise cancellation tech to work), to stay in contact with your jaw - which you probably wont, you will find the noise cancellation technology to be excellent.

Somewhere in here there's a great product. It's just a pity that it's unusable due to HMI reasons.

Despite the 3 different ear bud sizes and the 3 different ear loop sizes (in two different styles) I cannot find any combination of these items to fit my ear. Now I know this may be personal. And I am sure there are peeps that will find a config to fit them. But neither I nor my wife can find a combination that will sit securely on our ear's without flying across the room / car every time you turn your head. This bad ear loop design also results in it being impossible to keep the noise cancellation plastic stud in contact with your jaw, therefore degrading the sound performance considerably.

Furthermore, Aliph have decided, in the name of style, to cunningly hide the buttons in places where you'll never find them when you want them, and you'll constantly hit them unintentionally when you're trying to squeeze the thing back into your ear / hold it on your head. Therefore most of the time you don't know whether the noise cancellation tech is on or off and you can't get the volume right.

Overall an unusable product for me, which is a pity coz, it should have been great.
Recommendations to Aliph:
1) Add a sprung ear loop
2) Use an ear channel type ear bud instead of the mushroom type
3) Don't be afraid to put a couple of discreet but usable buttons on the side
4) Sell sell sell.

Oh BTW - it also came with a US style charger plug - Useless in the UK. Though it can be charged via USB.

Anyone want to buy my unused Aliph Jawbone 2.0 for £40 + shipping?
