4.0 out of 5 stars In-depth, fast-paced and thorough. Overall very good., 27 Jan 2008

This review is from: Java and SQL (Paperback)
On the whole I found the book was fast-paced, which from a professional perspective was ideal ('time is money'!). The initial theoretical coverage of topics (with interesting historical details) provides a solid grounding, followed by practical coverage that is reinforced with numerous examples. Some topics are necessarily closely-tied to a particular RDBMS (Oracle, in this case), but the author is careful to explain where vendor-specific concepts are used. Overall the book delivers on its title's suggested content, and a great deal more besides.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to Java and SQL, 7 Jan 2008

This review is from: Java and SQL (Paperback)
This is a very clear and concise introduction to Java programming language and SQL. It covers Java and database fundamentals as well as more advanced topics in lucid language, and includes plenty of good examples. The book is very easy to follow and will be a most useful companion to both beginners and more advanced Java and SQL programmers. I highly recommend it.

1.0 out of 5 stars doesn't do what it says on the tin, 20 May 2010
This review is from: Java and SQL (Paperback)
The book claims to be an introduction to Java and SQL. It claims to be a concise tool. It isn't - it's far too brief and basic, attempting to cover big subjects in barely 100 pages of cheaply printed typeface.

I wouldn't recommend it to a beginner, there are far, far, better introductory books out there. Look at O'Reilly. They may be more expensive as a package but the two books Head First Java and Head First SQL will give a much better grounding for newbies to the scene. As well as the depth of examples to really educate and enthuse learners. This book reads like a collection of teaching notes for non-programmers, perhaps a course for engineers who only need to muddle through a few basic programming exercises?

It is NOT a reference for professionals, or any intermediate level programmer. The contents are far too simple and do not offer any realistic approach to "building applications".

There are far better books out there and this is completely inadequate for anyone who really wants to learn about Java and/or SQL. You cannot establish the knowledge needed to program in these two languages from this book - it doesn't even provide the most basic of springboards to more comprehensive texts (whereas O'Reilly does).
