The exercise in this book (well, there is only exercise) way way way harder and trickier than the real exam. I scored 58% average in those mock tests but 83% in the real one. It did help me understand much deeper on Core Java and the explanation for each question is clear as well. But don't reply on this book, it wouldn't help you pass the exam if you don't have a study guide in hand.

Hi,

I feel I can now review this book having now taken and passed the exam today (finally) or should that be try { takeExam() }Finally (writeReview()} (sorry...)

Anyway, this book is way more difficult than the real exam because as it has been said before, the questions in the book do not tell you how many answers are correct, there are more options and they're simply more devious. You'll find that the exams in this book take longer too as due to not knowing how many answers are correct, you have to study the questions longer.

Having said that if you're passing the exams in this book then you'll easily be able to pass the exam. I would say that this book is good at making you a better coder for spotting errors and will probably help you fix more bugs in your code :)

As well as 4 full practice exams, there is also a chapter of exercises to do. I would recommend doing these as they really cement the knowledge into your head. Also don't be tempted to use an IDE when you do these, use something simple like notepad++. Again this will make you spot compiler errors yourself more. The answers are well argued so you'll learn even if you make a mistake.

Also to mention there are some mistakes in this book, so if you really don't agree with an answer after checking on a compiler then do a google and you'll find other people have come across the same thing (can't remember the mistakes off the top of my head).

I used this book in quite an intensive way, having done the first exam some weeks ago, I did the final 3 exams over 3 days (after doing the exercises in chapter 4). I found it sometimes easier to simply do 10-20 questions and mark myself on those questions giving myself a percentage.

Finally just to give you an idea of what I was getting in these practice exams as opposed to the real ones, I was getting between 65-70% in these exams. I just got 96% in the real exam.

Roll on the Java 7 version...

Good luck.
Mike

As the authors state, the exams in this book are harder than the real exam - I was getting only about 50% of them right, but yesterday passed the real exam with 93% :) If you work through this book and take the time to understand all of the questions - type the code examples, run them, mess around with them, study their behaviour with a debugger - then you'll learn a lot about the language and be in really good stead of the exam. It also helps if you have the authors' study guide too.
