Amazon.co.uk Review

Java In a Nutshell: the third edition of the well-known reference covers the essential APIs of Java 1.2, including networking, security, input and output, and basic language and utility classes. If you are looking for a Java reference, this is a solid volume that will provide lasting value. --John Keogh

Java Examples In a Nutshell: despite starting at the absolute beginning, the second edition of Java Examples In a Nutshell goes to the limits with sections on using RMI, JDBC, XML, servlets, JSP and lots more. It covers GUI programming, sound, encryption, internationalisation and other technologies essential for creating practical programs--all with exercises to ensure you really do understand. While Java code is available from many Net sites the combination of organisation, examples and exercises make this a massively useful book for any budding or working Java programmer. --Steve Patient

Java Enterprise In a Nutshell gives advanced Java developers a one-stop resource for programming with the disparate APIs required for today's enterprise development, including JDBC, RMI, servlets, and EJBs. Overall, this handy and readable guide to the latest in Java APIs can be truly invaluable to the developer bringing Java to the corporate enterprise for the first time. --Richard Dragan

Java Foundation Classes In a Nutshell: this book is positioned between O'Reilly's Java In a Nutshell and Java Enterprise titles. It's really two books in that the first seven chapters (to page 136) are entirely concerned with the graphics and graphical user interface APIs in Java 2. There are lots of examples, mainly using Swing, which augments AWT. Although it covers a lot of ground quickly, Java Foundation Classes In a Nutshell does a good job of discussing the differences from Java 1.0 and 1.2. It also explains a lot of the real world usage issues that arise when constructing Java interfaces. --Steve Patient

Product Description

The Java Professional Library contains durable, hardcover editions of our four indispensable Java references:

  • Java in a Nutshell, the essential quick reference for all Java programmers. This accelerated introduction to the Java language and its key APIs allows seasoned programmers to start writing code right away. The third edition covers Java 1.2 and Java 1.3.
  • Java Examples in a Nutshell, 2nd Edition. David Flanagan, the author of Java in a Nutshell, has created an entire book chock-full of real-world Java programming examples that developers can both learn from and modify for their own use. The second edition covers Java 1.3 and contains 164 complete, practical examples: over 17,900 lines of densely commented, professionally written Java code covering 20 distinct Java API's, including Servlets, JavaServer Pages, XML, Swing, and Java 2D.
  • Java Enterprise in a Nutshell, O'Reilly's classic-style quick reference for all of the classes in the various packages that comprise the Enterprise APIs, such as JDBC, RMI, Java IDL, Servlets, JNDI, and Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB).
  • Java Foundation Classes in a Nutshell, a companion volume to Java in a Nutshell for programmers who write applications that use graphics or graphical user interfaces. This fast-paced introduction to the Java APIs that comprise the Java Foundation Classes (JFC) is also a quick reference to all of the classes in the javax.swing and java.awt packages and their numerous subpackages.

If you are after the definitive guide to JAVA programming, then this is it - nothing else compares with it. Though, in my opinion, not suited for beginers.

A must for any Java developer.

Orielly have finally seen fit to release some of the most usefull books on java ever published [together]. The nutshell series have long been a favourite reference source of mine with clear and consise explanations of basic language features such as the basic types, to its encylopedic reference to the java api.

The two most usefull books to general java programers in this set are java in a nutshell and java examples in a nutshell, both of these books are excellent and accomplish what they set out to achieve. That is why orielly is a long standing favourite with java developers. If you are in an office writing day to day java code and need reference material that is easy to use and understand this set is a MUST purchase.

All together now I say. O' Reilly sure brews the best java. Thanks to the O'reilly books I have read in the past, my java is so strong and I'm getting paid.

The java library brings it all together. Even though I have most of these titles. I'm still going to get this. What better than to have it all in one place. A bit like my Godfather collection, this one is for the library.

O'Reilly please keep brewing that stuff. Its hot its strong and it gets me paid
