No solutions 1 Mar 2002

You can't learn Java without practising. This book sets you exercises but doesn't give you any solutions to work with, so when you get stuck, you have to just give up unless you know another Java expert. It's a nice read, a good way to understand the core concepts, but you won't be able to write any code because you probably got stuck with the exercises in the first couple of chapters and then gave up on the more advanced ones after not mastering the basics.

In my opinion this book is not useful unless the buyer is just starting to learn to write programs and Java is the first language they are learning. In which case the book takes them through each stage and type of statement in painstakingly great detail. For those that have programmed in at least on language before eg. C. C++ then this book is not for you, the writer takes a whole chapter to explain Arrays, which should really only take a few pages.

One good thing about this book is that a beginner will find the 'Test Yourself' section at the end of each chapter very useful. The questions are not simple and do require you to think about the structure and object orientated nature of Java. Also the free CD provides some source code that could be useful to Run then Edit and see what difference it makes.

All in all the book is not bad, it does cover things such as Applets and images but if your looking for tuition on the database or more complicated sides of java then pass this book over and spend your money on another book.
