In terms of programming, it covers object-orientation, software design, structured programming, graphical user interfacing, networking and finishes with an introduction to algorithms and data structures.

Judy Bishop's approach and style will excite students and keep them interested in programming, covering the Web aspects of Java whilst ensuring that the important principles of good programming are mastered.

From the Back Cover

The third edition of Java Gently by Judith Bishop continues the successful approach that made earlier versions popular and has added improvements which will maintain its place as a worldwide bestseller.
Java Gently teaches the reader how to program and how to do it in the best possible style in Java. In the process, it details the fundamental structures of the Java 2 language and most of its core libraries and utilities. The book covers object-orientation, software design, structured programming, graphical user interfacing, event-driven programming, networking, and an introduction to data structures.
Java Gently gets students started on meaningful input/output in an object-oriented way without hiding basic concepts. Applets, multimedia, graphics, and networking are introduced as students encounter and can handle classes, objects, instantiation, and inheritance.
The textbook's excellent pedagogy reinforces understanding and demonstrates good programming practice. The three kinds of diagrams include model, form, and algorithm diagrams. The fully worked examples have been carefully chosen to illustrate recently introduced concepts and solve real-world problems in a user-friendly manner. End of chapter multiple choice quizzes and problems allow students to test their comprehension of the material.
Java Gently is intended for first time programmers as well as those fascinated by the possibilities of Java and the Internet.
Judith Bishop is Professor of Computer Science at the University of Pretoria, and has a wealth of experience teaching programming to undergraduates. She is the author of nine other textbooks. She serves on IFIP and IEEE committees concerned with the technical programming issues and the worldwide promotion of computing. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

I will keep this brief and to the point; Java Gently is the most confusing and poorly explained book on Java you could ever wish to buy. There are so many other books that explain how to begin programming in this language far more clearly. Avoid this book unless you want confusing and to struggle along...

During my first year on university I was recommended this book by my University lecturers as a means to assist my learning in Java. It was useless. In fact it was worse than useless - it made me think I must be useless at programming as I couldn't learn in. Many years later as a reasonably successful IT professional I can say that in fact it was the book. In a world where there are so many good books to learn Java with I can't understand how this one slipped through and went on general sale.

I've used this book to teach classes in Java and object oriented programming for beginners. The topics covered are ok - but the book has quite a lot of poor explanations - thing my student don't understand when they read it. Furthermore topics are NOT covered easy and important things first, but in a rather random way. The book has parts that even I (as an experienced Java-programmer) find difficult to understand - not because the topics are hard to understand - but because of bad writing.
