I will keep this brief and to the point; Java Gently is the most confusing and poorly explained book on Java you could ever wish to buy. There are so many other books that explain how to begin programming in this language far more clearly. Avoid this book unless you want confusing and to struggle along...

During my first year on university I was recommended this book by my University lecturers as a means to assist my learning in Java. It was useless. In fact it was worse than useless - it made me think I must be useless at programming as I couldn't learn in. Many years later as a reasonably successful IT professional I can say that in fact it was the book. In a world where there are so many good books to learn Java with I can't understand how this one slipped through and went on general sale.

I've used this book to teach classes in Java and object oriented programming for beginners. The topics covered are ok - but the book has quite a lot of poor explanations - thing my student don't understand when they read it. Furthermore topics are NOT covered easy and important things first, but in a rather random way. The book has parts that even I (as an experienced Java-programmer) find difficult to understand - not because the topics are hard to understand - but because of bad writing.

Don't bother with this book
This is supposed to be a "gentle" introduction to Java and Programming but it is more confusing than illuminating. The explanation of a 'do-while' loop is wrong! Read more
