Product Description

Product Description

Java provides the engineer and scientist with an efficient and easy-to-use tool for problem solving in today's web-based environment. This text draws on a wide range of engineering and scientific problems to teach Java by example. From the start, solutions are presented via a special graphics package so that the reader can appreciate the physical significance of the underlying mathematics. Covers all of the Java language, its standard libraries and utilities. In terms of programming, it covers object-orientation, software design, structured programming, graphical user interfacing, data representation, animation and networking.

By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This book has a brief introduction to Java programming, although short it is somewhat concise. Leaving out the majority of jargon which is not needed to write code to complete mathematical methods.

It contains an abundance of examples and case studies to compile. These can become very useful when trying to devise code of your own for projects, with helpful hints and tips. But these can be tricky to run, after browsing their website I found I was not the only reader to encounter these problems.

With the examples included in the book it emphasises on designing programs which are user friendly. Every example incudes a graphical user interface, to give your code a more modern and professional appearance instead of the dull and dreary dos environment.

Thankfully this book does not include uneccesary information and code on the links between Java and the internet. Many books forget that Java is a useful tool for devising code for other requirements rather than just websites.

From the website you can download a package which accompanies the book to enable the reader to run the graphical code included in the book.

Again this is another Java book which lacks the information on databases, which is badly needed by all us engineers. Experiments which this code is needed for are usually accompanied with numerous streams of input.

But this book is definelty a reccomended read for students, why be baffled by all that jargon used by computer programmers when this book speaks in an approach understandable by engineers.

Very Frustrating 17 May 2011
Format:Paperback
As a science student who has experience with other programming languages I thought this book would be ideal to learn Java from, but I found my whole experience with this book frustrating.

The use of the 'javagently' packages to visualise graphs and format text etc from the very start is problematic as I had problems getting the packages to work (as did alot of other people it seems from searching the web). After spending a number of hours attempting to fix the problem, I just gave up and attempted to modify the examples to avoid calling the packages, while this has helped me somewhat with the language it is clearly not what is intended and it reaches a point where this is not practical and at this point the book became useless to me.

While some people may like to just start writing code, it would be useful early on in the book to know what all the declarations in the code mean and what they apply to, blindly following an example is not a good way to learn, it may be that these issues are addressed later in the book I don't know I didn't get that far.

Good book of examples for those who need the big picture. 1 April 2000
By David - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
If your a student with entry level university calculus and you have some previous programming experince then this java book is for you.

Filled with technical examples that demonstrate the object oriented nature of Java. Topics covered: stream input/output, GUI development, graphing, animation, event handling, exceptions, reading and writing to files, and networking.

This book is not for the intermediate Java developer. But for those who require a step-by-step problem solving methodology in algorithmic development. Abstract engineering principles come alive when these algorithms are developed in the Java environment.
