Although the title may seem a little pretentious, don't let this put you off. This book is a solid introduction to the history and culture of Java, in particular the traditions and sociology of the classic Central Javanese heartland of the sultanates of Yogyakarta and Surakarta. The authors' youthful enthusiasm for and fascination with all things Javanese shines through on every page.
I lived in Central Java in the early 1970s (when this book was written and where I met one of the authors) and recently re-read this book. It brought back many memories. I may be wrong, but I doubt if any general introduction to this fascinating civilization has been written since, which replaces this book.
