"A great resource for anyone wishing to learn how to integrate Ant into his personal set of best practices for software configuration management solutions."

Product Description

The most widely used build tool for Java projects, Ant is cross-platform, extensible, simple, and fast. It scales from small personal projects to large, multi-team J2EE projects. And, most important, it's easy to learn.
  • Java Development with Ant systematically explores what Ant can do, and how to apply it to your project. Whether you are new to Ant, or an experienced user, this book will show you powerful and creative uses for Ant.
  • The book emphasizes basic concepts you need to know to effectively use Ant starting with Ant's XML-driven build process. It leads you step-by-step through everything you need to know to compile, test, package and deploy an application. It then guides you through the maze of more complex situations common in larger projects such as enterprise Java applications and Web Services.
  • With this book you will gain access to a powerful tool to automatically build, test and deploy your Java software, no matter how simple or complex it might be.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is a must, 5 Nov 2002
By A Customer
If you are using Ant, you need this book. There are two main reasons: 1) This is a well-written book. 2) The online documentation for Ant simply sucks.

The book is good for both novice and intermediate Ant users. I expect that even expert Ant users will find this book useful.

I have given it 5 stars because I feel this book is necessary for any serious Ant user. However, if 4 and a half stars were possible, that would be my rating. This is because the book focuses a bit too much on using Ant for server-side Java development. I am developing mainly applets and the book does not have much to say about that. But it doesn't change the fact that it is a good book.

5.0 out of 5 stars At last a guide to more advanced features of Ant, 12 Mar 2003
By A. Bowes "andy_bowes" (UK) - See all my reviews

I have been using Ant for a couple of years now and thought that I knew it fairly well. This book has opened up a whole new perspective on Ant's capabilities and allowed me to go back and refine my existing build files to incorporate the gems that this book imparts. It certainly takes Ant beyond the build, test and deploy cycle into areas that include automatic code generation and tight integration with the XP methodology.

As other reviewers have said, this book really is essential reading for anyone who is even considering using Ant.

Probably the best technical book that I have bought in years.

This book doesn't just cover the basics but also goes into detail about Unit Testing, Web services etc.

It's very clear and well written.

Highly recommended.
