The most widely used build tool for Java projects, Ant is cross-platform, extensible, simple, and fast. It scales from small personal projects to large, multi-team J2EE projects. And, most important, it's easy to learn.
  • Java Development with Ant systematically explores what Ant can do, and how to apply it to your project. Whether you are new to Ant, or an experienced user, this book will show you powerful and creative uses for Ant.
  • The book emphasizes basic concepts you need to know to effectively use Ant starting with Ant's XML-driven build process. It leads you step-by-step through everything you need to know to compile, test, package and deploy an application. It then guides you through the maze of more complex situations common in larger projects such as enterprise Java applications and Web Services.
  • With this book you will gain access to a powerful tool to automatically build, test and deploy your Java software, no matter how simple or complex it might be.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is a must 5 Nov 2002
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
If you are using Ant, you need this book. There are two main reasons: 1) This is a well-written book. 2) The online documentation for Ant simply sucks.

The book is good for both novice and intermediate Ant users. I expect that even expert Ant users will find this book useful.

I have given it 5 stars because I feel this book is necessary for any serious Ant user. However, if 4 and a half stars were possible, that would be my rating. This is because the book focuses a bit too much on using Ant for server-side Java development. I am developing mainly applets and the book does not have much to say about that. But it doesn't change the fact that it is a good book.

5.0 out of 5 stars At last a guide to more advanced features of Ant 12 Mar 2003
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have been using Ant for a couple of years now and thought that I knew it fairly well. This book has opened up a whole new perspective on Ant's capabilities and allowed me to go back and refine my existing build files to incorporate the gems that this book imparts. It certainly takes Ant beyond the build, test and deploy cycle into areas that include automatic code generation and tight integration with the XP methodology.

As other reviewers have said, this book really is essential reading for anyone who is even considering using Ant.

Probably the best technical book that I have bought in years.

This book doesn't just cover the basics but also goes into detail about Unit Testing, Web services etc.

It's very clear and well written.

Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars At last...a book that makes Ant seem easy 7 May 2003
Format:Paperback
In the past I’ve struggled to get to grips with Ant but this book has made Ant very easy to understand. The book starts at a very basic level, but soon introduces more advanced (well advance to me) aspects of using ant.
The book is very well written, with clear, concise examples (all the example I’ve tried so far seem to work too!)
Not sure how good this book is for experienced Ant users but it certainly an excellent book for novice/intermediate users

I must say this book has helped me incredible over the last week and a half. I was already a user of Ant, but this book has given me many hints on how to make my build scripts better and easier to maintain. At the end of most chapters, there is a 'Best Practice' summary, excellent for describing what to do under certain conditions (e.g. Testing with JUnit).

The book is split in 4 parts, part 1-3 desribing Ant in depth while part 4 is a fantasic Appendix. Just part 1 (general Ant introduction) and the appendix alone is worth buying this book, let alone the extra information you get.

I would recommend this book in the strongest terms should you use ant for building/testing and/or deploying.

This book gives a thorough presentation of Ant, it's features and they way they are used. However I was disappointed with the tutorial aspects of it.
I started reading the book, typing in the examples along the way, and by the end of chapter 2 had a basic build file. However I found the examples from chapter 4 onwards difficult to follow in detail - not because they were hard, but becasuse they were presented as bits of code that referred to other bits of code elsewhere in other paragraphs, pages or chapters.
Ant is not a difficult tool, but the effort require to read this is greater than what it deserves - hence the low rating.

The is the one and only book you require if your using ANT and Java. Believe me when I say that it is an excellent and thorough book that has almost everything, And it has served well as I have progressed from trainee to senior developer.
