Review

"[An] informed and detailed history of the famed Jasta ... which takes us from the squadron's formation in Flanders, through its final days at Montigen ... a must have for modelers." -Tim Kidwell, "Model Retailer"

.".. a well-done squadron history, with accounts of many fliers during the organization's service life and within the perspective of broader operations." -Peter Kilduff, "Between the Bookends "

Product Description

The history of Royal Prussian Jagdstaffel (or Jasta) 18 is one of the more unique and complex of German fighter squadrons of World War I. In fact, the unit could be said to have had something of a 'split personality'. Formed in Flanders at the end of October 1916, the Jasta was first commanded by Oblt von Grieffenhagen, who led it to 35 victories in nine months. In August 1917, the aggressive and demanding Oblt Rudolf Berthold took over the Staffel and brought a cadre of seasoned pilots with him from his former command. Berthold molded his new unit into a dedicated group of hunters, and left his stamp on the unit with a striking color scheme of red-nosed Pfalz and Albatros fighters.

Another Sprey Winner 16 Aug 2011
By ragsas
Format:Paperback
This book is a must for all those who are interested in the early days of air warfare. Jasta 18, known as the Red Noses because of its distinctive unit markings, was one of the premier German squadrons of the time and Greg VanWyngarden has done a superb job in reearching this detailed history of the unit and its men and aircraft.

This is a well written and thoroughly readable book from cover to cover, and is amply illustrated to Osprey's usual high standards. Detailed accounts of particular air fights are accompanied by almost equally detailed biographies of the units 'high flyers', and among the illustrations there are 26 colour plates providing the aero-modeller with a fine choice of finishes for Albatros, Pfalz, Fokker Triplane and Fokker DVII aircraft flown by the Jasta.

In all, as well as being very readable and informative Greg's book stands up an excellent reference work. It was well worth every penny I paid for it.

I have just purchased a Great Planes model of the Fokker DV11 - in the markings of Jasta 18. I was interested in the history of the Jasta - and this book give a great insight into the pilots and markings of the various planes used.
Good stuff!

Another great book from Greg VanWyngarden 5 April 2011
By J. W. Herris - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Greg VanWyngarden is a noted authority and author on German fighter aviation of the Great War, and his new title on Jasta 18 continues his high standard of research and writing. As always the text is supported by wonderful photos and superior artwork by the talented Harry Dempsey, who has illustrated all of Osprey's WWI aviation titles. The profiles alone are worth the price of admission. This book is an invaluable resource for WWI aviation enthusiasts, historians, and modelers. If you fit into any of those categories, get this book!

I enjoyed reading every word of this excellent written book. The photos were very clear and if you are considering building either a flying replica or a static model of any of the airplanes featured here, it is well worth your money to purchase this book

Superb History! 19 May 2011
By P. A. Panozzo - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I agree with the other reviewer (J.W. Herris). Greg VanWyngarden has superbly set forth the fascinating history of Jasta 18 "The Red Noses". Like other Osprey titles, the color profiles by Harry Dempsey are fabulous as usual and Greg VanWyngarden is a meticulous and passionate researcher / historian of World War One aviation. The photos and text are superbly synchronized! This title goes hand in hand with VanWyngarden's other volume Jagdgeschwader Nr II Geschwader 'Berthold' (Aviation Elite Units). I recommend acquiring both of these volumes if you are passionate about World War One German aviation. I also recommend Vanwyngarden's other Osprey titles 'Richthofen's Circus': Jagdgeschwader Nr 1 (Aviation Elite Units)] ][[ASIN:1841769975 Early German Aces of World War I (Aircraft of the Aces)] ][[ASIN:1846032032 Jagdstaffel 2 Boelcke: Von Richthofen's Mentor (Aviation Elite Units) Pfalz Scout Aces of World War 1 (Aircraft of the Aces)
