Product Description

Leonard’s story starts as rugby started – in the amateur era, when the Cockney Carpenter played for Barking and Saracens, in the days before multi-million pound sponsorship deals. His big break came when he was invited to join the England squad for their tour to Argentina in 1990; he has since been capped a world-record 114 times.

In his autobiography, Leonard provides a compelling insight into life with England and the British Lions, as well as the domestic game through his time at Saracens and Harlequins.

Once told that he would never walk again after undergoing life-saving surgery on his neck, Leonard describes the torment he went through during this period – both physical and financial – and how he fought against all the odds to re-establish himself on the international stage. With a world-record 114 Test caps, three Lions tours and a career in rugby union spanning two decades, there is no more experienced player in the modern game.

Leonard has plenty to tell about the people he has met during his career – Rob Andrew, Will Carling, Lawrence Dallaglio, Brian Moore, Dick Best and Clive Woodward all feature – and with nicknames like 'The Fun Bus' and 'The Scourge of the Barking Barmaids' the stories are as colourful and controversial as the man himself.

All is revealed in this fascinating portrait of an English rugby legend – which also includes a detailed insider’s account of England's 2003 World Cup victory and the reasons behind his decision to retire from the international arena.

Great funny book 26 Aug 2004
I saw this book in a book shop and read most of it while standing at the shelves - it's very funny. Jason's written such a funny, observant book. It's full of stories about what he gets up to off the field as well as insight into life on it. I think there will never be another book like this because jason describes the move from amateurism to professioanlism and you see the way in which he had to change as a player and a man to cope. There is the soft side to jason as he describes the birth of his children and the serious side when you hear about his first cap in argentina. this is really a good book. OUTSTANDING 9 Sep 2004
If you like Jason Leonard you've just got to read his book it's so funny - how he grew from a reckless toddler to the most capped player in the game - full of funny, funny stories. My favourite things is when he selected his all time drinking XV and takes someone who doesn't drink so they can drive the bus home (Rory Underwood). Very, very funny and also moving. I loved this. I've never put reviews on here before but this is well worth the read.

Full Time 29 Nov 2009
A good book that charts one of the few players to have seen the amateur game become professional. I would like to have seen a few more match anecdotes like pit bull necking a can of beer that had been thrown onto the pitch but over such a long career there would not have been room.
