Jason Cockcroft was born in Auckland, New Zealand. When he was a baby, his family returned to Leeds, where he lived until he moved to Cornwall to attend Art College. He graduated from Falmouth School of Art in 1994. While a student, his work was noticed by the children's literary agent, Eunice McMullen. Thanks mainly to her hard work, he continues to find work as an illustrator.
He has illustrated picture books for Bloomsbury, Hodder, OUP, Orchard Books and Frances Lincoln in the UK, and Henry Holt, Dutton Books, Alfred A Knopf and Margaret McElderry Books in the United States. He won the Blue Peter Book Award for his work on Geraldine McCaughrean's retelling of 'A Pilgrim's Progress'.
He now lives hear Whitby with his wife, Lisa, and their two cats.
