If God plays the violin, he'll sound like Jascha Heifetz.,

This review is from: Jascha Heifetz Centenary Edition (Audio CD)
Writing as someone who was a student when the monumental RCA box set was released a few years ago, (and was therefor unable to afford it!!) this set comes as a godsend. All the great concerto performances of Mr. Heifetz's 'Golden period' are here. Everything is as it should be - the 'liquid lava' tone, the flawless intonation, the bite, the driving interpretations are all here. And more!! In fact, its easy to believe that this is the ONLY way to play these pieces. (It's not, but Mr. Heifetz makes you believe that this is so!). I have always found it incredible that great contemporary players such as Itzhak Perlman and Pinchas Zuckerman (to name but two) are on record as saying that he is the player THEY aspire to be! Any violinist worth their rosin will agree with them. Not only that, but to have such riches at such a small price is a great thing indeed. These discs would be worth their weight in gold. Don't waste any more time reading this - purchase these discs A.S.A.P. You will not regret it. 5 Stars? 10 Stars!!!

This is, of its kind, the best violin playing you will ever hear. Heifetz was held in awe by musicians and audiences alike in his lifetime and his recorded legacy, taken as a whole, shows why. These performances are among the best he ever recorded, and though they are very old, the sound is perfectly acceptable and the Naxos transfers are very good indeed. What I like most about Heifetz is that in the 'greatest' works, the big concertos and, for example, the Bach Sonatas and Partitas (which are not in this set), his astonishing control is nearly always the servant of the music, and though you cannot but marvel at what he does with the instrument, it is always musical and thoughtful. He varies bowing and fingering to achieve differing effects in repeated passagework, for example, and has a wonderful way with tone colour. Anyway, some of his recorded legacy is not of this quality ; he was recorded too close, the balance was wrong, the recording was dry, he even occasionally had an off-day. But this set is pretty well uniformly good, which means it is absolutely essential listening if you are interested in 20th-century violin playing.
