Sam Mendes brings his 'thinking movie' (American Beauty, Road to Perdition) style to the US army.

Written by a returning soldier, Jarhead focuses on Swoff and his journey through bootcamp to a sniper (with his spotter) in the Iraq war. Politics, comedy and harsh reality all make an appearance making Jarhead an intriguing mix. It is a war movie but then again it's not because the main point of the story is that the soldiers aren't doing much actual warfare - they are simple preparing (and getting bored). Hence, this movie may not be for someone looking for a full-on war movie.

I know quite a few people who dislike this film, some even say it is very bad. But I for one totally disagree. The beginning is genuinely funny, the middle is filled with suspense and day to day action within the marine corps. The ending is very good, but it does slightly miss something.

This is, in my opinion, an excellent film. The music score is excellent, the characters are very believable and you empathise with them. I am a big fan of war films, and I do enjoy a film like 'Black Hawk Down' which is near enough guns blazing from start to finish. However, 'Jarhead' is a different and well judged approach to a usually stereotyped genre. Well worth a watch if you want a war film you can really get in to.

The stars that are in this film are enough to give this film a go, but the cast alone isn't enough to make it a good film of course. The actual "story" behind this film is quite a decent one. There are a lot of laughs, including forcing the protagonist to play a trumpet...with his mouth/hands. There are some very sad/bad moments, when jake gyllenhaal tries to force his colleague to shoot him in the face. There are so many ups and downs, funny moments and heart warming moments, all i will say is you have to give this film a chance and you shouldn't be disappointed. (Especially seeing as its such a good price)
