4.0 out of 5 stars The Japanese Bath - Californian Style, 9 Aug 2002
By A Customer
This is something of a coffee table book and DIY pastiche, giving a solid, though bite-sized introduction to Japanese bathing and bath design.

For the uninitiated this will serve as an appetizer to the ambient realm of Japanese bathing ritual. However, faithful disciples will be surprised if they expect to see photos of their favourite mountain onsen or a huge variety of Tokyo bathrooms and downtown o-sento in this book. In fact, 'The Japanese Bath' is more about East meets West. The West Coast to be precise.

For enthusiasts living in the States, this book should prove particularly useful, as it provides a comprehensive listing of local Japanese bath suppliers, architects, and craftspeople, as well as a definitive guide to West Coast hot springs. For those elsewhere (besides Japan of course), this book will serve to remind how tantalising Japanese aesthetics can be, and perhaps make us a tad jealous of those Californians who have so authentically recreated the Japanese bath in their own homes. Little did we know that nestled amid Californian hinterland and mountain forest exists many a magical Japanese kingdom.....

Overall this is about creating your own Japanese bath. My hunch is that if you typed 'Japanese' or 'Bath' into the Amazon search engine you're not your average sort of person, and may have been looking for ideas or leads into making your own unique space, so this book may just hit the spot. Gambatte!
