I confess that I judged this book by its cover to a degree, but have been pleasantly surprised since buying it.
While it is now out of date regarding the current state of play in Japanese politics, especially with regards to the changes wrought by local and global economic crises, this book does serve as a very useful grounding in the party-political system of Japan, and how policies, events and economics have influenced one another since 1955.
It is very much an exposition of the ruling party, the LDP, explaining how the party formed, performed and changed over the decades to remain in popular power. However some attention is also given to the other singificant parties and political stances in existence at the time of publishing, and a significant chapter is devoted to the attitudes of the people ("Changing Japanese Voter") during the period covered.
Although there is a wealth of research and reference behind this book, the author was not afraid to make astute comments or useful generalisations to give the facts some colour and context, which makes the book especially interesting for the uninformed beginner. It's a shame it has not been updated to reflect recent changes, but as an introduction to the character and form of the socio-political landscape of modern Japan, it is a very useful resource. Even if the cover is a bit dull.
