Book Description

1 April 1995 4770018843 978-4770018847 Revised
THE REVISED EDITION OF JAPANESE FOR BUSY PEOPLE In the ten years since its publication, Japanese for Busy People has won acceptance worldwide as an effective, easy-to-understand textbook, either for classroom use or for independent study. In this new edition, numerous revisions and additions have been made, taking into account the comments and responses of both students and teachers who have been using the course.
In Book I, the revisions are directed at making the grammatical explanations easier to understand, while adding further explanations of points that students have difficulty with. Changes have also been made in favor of more natural practice sentences and dialogues. In addition, new appendices list the particles, interrogatives, and sentence patterns in the book, as well as the kanji introduced.
More fundamental revisions have been made to Book II, which has been expanded and divided into two volumes, Book II and Book Ill. The changes result in a smoother transition from Book I, make new grammatical elements clearer, and present more natural practice dialogues and exercise sentences.
THE JAPANESE FOR BUSY PEOPLE COURSE This concise course in natural Japanese is ideal for such students as businessmen whose aim is a working knowledge of the spoken language in everyday life. Survival Japanese for Adults, ' as it might be called, gets to the heart of the language without recourse to childish or classroom-only Japanese.
Book II consists of twenty lessons in the same format as Book I, with dialogues, notes on grammar, and vocabulary, exercises and quizzes. The dialogues introduce the daily language and life of adult Japanese and, compared with Book I, conversations are more natural and include abbreviated expressions and suitable responses. In this revised Book II, kanji are introduced systematically, and alternate readings, stroke order and associated kanji are given for the characters appearing in each chapter.

I discovered this book when it was used in a beginning Japanese language course at the local county college. I travel back and forth to Japan a lot and missed classes sometimes. I had the book with me most of the time, and almost everyone I talk to in Japan recognizes the book as a popular text for teaching Japanese to foreigners. What I like most about the book is that I didn't have any trouble keeping up with the occasional missed class, because the book is so self-explanatory. You can work through the lessons on your own and get almost as much out of it as you do from the class.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-buy book 1 May 2005
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This book is fundamental for all those who are keen on learning Japanese. The title might seem confusing, but don't worry: this book does not concentrate only on business issues, but gives an introduction into Japanese culture more than anything else. Even though sometimes it includes vocabulary that isn't really necessary at this stage - things like "contractor", or "supplier" - it is a great book. It is not recommendable to buy this book without having first studied the first volume, on which this book is based on. Beware though that this second volume is much harder than the first one. It is all written in kana and it does therefore take much longer to read. Also, each of its 20 lessons introduces a lot of new vocabulary and new grammar rules, so it's not always easy to go through them. However, even though sometimes frustration can come up, the book manages to keep a feasable pace, without giving the reader an information overload.
I strongly recommend to buy also the Workbook in addition to this book, as they both complete each other in an excellent way.
Buy this book if you are serious in learning Japanese. There is no real alternative to it I believe.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great course, but there's a new edition now 16 Aug 2008

Excellent Japanese language learning book. Amazon keeps prompting me to review this, otherwise I wouldn't have, as there's a new edition out now. The good thing about the new edition is that it comes with an audio CD. With this edition, only the workbook had a CD. The CD covers all the target dialogues and other dialogues. It's a bit dull compred with the likes of, say, Japanese101 Pod (highly recommended), but I think it's beneficial to listen over and over again to the dialogues nevertheless.

I really like the methodolody behind this course. It's a buisness Japanese course but is very much grammar-based. Very well thought-out and organised, and it deserves a lot of praise.

I wouldn't recommed tackling this text alone, but if you go to langauge classes with this as the text and study it alongside a great audio product like the lessons and lesson support from Japanese101 Pod, and a more 'fun', casual Japanese book like Japanese the Manga Way, you should be able to learn quite effectively.
