Book Description

5 July 2012 Far Eastern Series / Victoria and Albert Museum
The Japanese netsuke is a thing of wonder: a utilitarian accessory to traditional Japanese dress that has become an art form in itself, prized by collectors from East to West. The V&A's collection of netsuke is world-famous, and this stunning book draws on its many highlights to explore the origins of netsuke and to trace the sources of their designs in prints, paintings and woodblock-printed books. It records the evolution of materials and techniques and the patterns of craftsmanship, in a text that is both accessible and comprehensive, and is illustrated with some of the very finest examples of netsuke.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely book 14 April 2010
Format:Hardcover
I really enjoy the books produced by the V&A and this one is no exception. The book covers the V&A's famous netsuke collection, with good explanations for each one. The photos are superb, as you'd expect!

5.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous - so glad this is back in print 1 Aug 2013
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I have been chasing this lovely book for some years. The Netsuke collection at the V&A is superb and they have a copy of this book on display behind glass but it has been out of print for a while. Some lovely images from different angles and sometimes much closer than you can see them in real life because of the display restrictions (distance behind the glass and you can't see it from all angles. Would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Japanese culture, especially Netsuke.
