Speak Japanese - Instantly.
No books. No writing. No memorizing.

- Guaranteed success. Speak and understand perfectly
- Incredible progress. Get what you want, fast
- Absolute confidence. Unleash your natural learning style without trying

The Method:

Stress-free audio learning
Michel Thomas teaches you through your own language, so there's no stress, and no anxiety. He builds it up, step by step, and you don't move on until you've absorbed and understood the previous point. And, as Michel Thomas said, 'What you understand, you know; and what you know, you don't forget.'
With parallels to the way you learned your own language, each language is learned in 'real-time' conditions. There is no need to stop for homework, additional exercises or vocabulary memorization.

A 'virtual' classroom
The classroom situation on the recording lets you learn with others. You enjoy their success, and you learn from their mistakes. The students on the recordings are not reading from scripts and they have received no additional instruction or preparation - just the guidance you hear on the recording. You, as the learner, become the third student and participate actively in the class.

There's no such thing as a poor student, only a poor teacher
This is an important part of the Michel Thomas Method. Full responsibility for your learning lies with the teacher, not with you, the pupil. This helps to ensure that you can relax and feel confident, allowing you to learn effectively.

Why it Works:

Learn another language the way you learned
your own
You learned your own language naturally and enjoyably: now you can learn Japanese in the same way. You'll stick with it because you'll love it. Use the unique method perfected over fifty years by the celebrated  psychologist and linguist Michel Thomas.

This method works with your brain, helping you to build up your Japanese in manageable, enjoyable steps by thinking out the answers for yourself. You learn through listening and speaking without the pressure of writing or memorizing. You pick up the language naturally and unforgettably. Join the millions of people worldwide who have learned a new language with the Michel Thomas Method.

Don't be tied to chunky books or your computer, Michel Thomas Method audio courses let you learn whenever you want: at home, in your car, or on the move with your MP3 player.

The Thomas Michele method is brilliant. The recordings are excellent. You feel like you are part of a class, with a teacher, a pronunciation helper and two other students; one who is very good at picking it up so you feel competitive against and one who is not so good so you feel you are improving against and helps you recognise when they make mistakes. At least it helps me.

The whole point of Michele Thomas is that you don't write anything down. It works well, however, I have also been learning the hiragana and the katakana as I listen to these CDs and found that learning that really helps with the pronunciation. For example: for a while I wasn't sure about the difference between he/him which is Kare and because/therefore which is kara. It sounds very similar on the tape but reading it you can see the subtle difference. But that's the only problem I have as they do very good remembering tricks such as nemui meaning sleepy as "I may be sleepy but I am NEver MOOdY - nemui."

However, the Michele Thomas Company is very sneaky and I almost gave this product 3 stars but I felt that was unfair on the product which is really good when my grievance is with them. Basically, a few months ago when I decided to buy the Thomas Method Foundation course at about £39, I decided to not buy it because I saw they were bring out Thomas Michele Total Method with a promise of 4 hours more recording as well as PC help etc etc for £56. For the extra stuff I decided to pre-order that instead. But it wasn't out for a whole month.

So after waiting a month I then had to wait an extra 2 weeks because it was delayed for some reason and when it turned up, what did I find? The Thomas Michele Method Foundation Course repackaged. That's it. The CD's have different art on them but the actual files on the CDs still say "Foundation course." I've listened to the Foundation Course and it's the exact same recordings.

The description says "Visual review course and interactive exercises for PC or Mac*" and ""Over 2 hours of vocab help*" That star*, if you go to the Thomas Michele website, as Amazon doesn't say, means, "Not available for all languages." But directly underneath in a table row, "Available in:" with Japanese right there in the list. Why Amazon can't do a proper description and not just copy paste the table I do not know!

What is additionally annoying is that Amazon has now increased the price of the Foundation Course from £39 to £89! Meaning I could have saved money. As of writing this review the Total Japanese has gone down from £56 to £47. So it's not as bad now, but if I were you I'd wait till the price drops a bit more, after all, you are only paying for a different box!

Decent introduction 29 Feb 2012
By M. McManus VINE™ VOICE
Before buying this course, you need to know several things. Firstly, this course will NOT teach you holiday/travel phrases, so bear this in mind. Secondly, even if you complete the course due to a general interest in the language, you will still need other courses to reach a high level.

This course has good points and bad points. The teacher introduces you to Japanese, primarily through drilling a small number of high frequency verbs until you master them. You learn how to say things by more and more being added to simple sentences e.g. "I eat sushi/I eat sushi every day/I eat sushi but my friend does not" etc. This is a little tedious, but is surprisingly memorable.

The course does a decent job of introducing you to Japanese particles (wa, ga, ne, de, ka etc), which many other courses do not, and without the particles, your Japanese will always sound sketchy.

The course does have some weaknesses. One issue is that two verbs, imasu and arimasu are very important, yet don't appear in the course until the last 90 minutes of the 8 hour course. These needed to be earlier. Another issue is that whilst you learn the verbs that are introduced throughout the course well, there are not that many verbs in the course.

Overall, its a good course, but you will need more courses if you want to go further.

I've had Japanese lessons since September and although my writing is fine my speaking isn't amazing as it was hard to find encouragement to speak at home to nobody. These CDs are perfect. Not only do they get you speaking a lot of Japanese in a short amount of time but there is a native speaker who reads out anything said in the audio book so you truly get how what you're saying is meant to sound. For £60 this is great! Although I have had some issues with some of the discs not working if you contact the Michel Thomas company directly they will sort you out with any discs that don't work as they should. I will definitely be purchasing the Perfect Japanese course when it is out in April of this year!
