Product Description

The breathtaking colors and delicate shapes of the Japanese maple have long delighted gardeners and plant connoisseurs. Since the early 1600s, or before, the Japanese have revered and cultivated the maple, developing many new varieties. More than 300 cultivars are now in exixtence, their colors ranging from pale pink and white to purple and every shade of green.

This second edition, published in 1987, includes cultivars introduced since the book's first apperance, and reflects changes in taxonomy and nomenclature; many new photographs were added with comments on the uses of Japanese maples in landscapes design.

The amateur will find the volume the best souce from which to select and care for Japanese maples. The expert will find it a careful, complete, and authoriative description of all the extant cultivars. In addition to its usefulness, the book is a visual feast with its 250 color photographs.

A quite beautifully presented photographic guide to Japanese Maples that reminds the enthusiast just why they they do it. Taxonomy is informative, without being overbearing, however the quality of this book is in its illustration and accompanying text. A must buy for maple lovers and maple curious alike.

I have many other books on maples but this has to be one, if not the best, available at the moment. Packed with beautiful colour photos and genuinely useful information this easy reading book is a must for anybody with the slightest interest in maples. The descriptions of the individual trees have a depth of information not found in any of the other books I have read. The only reason I gave it four stars and not five was that the book was published in 1987 and so does not cover the some of the newer varieties available today - never the less, I would consider this an essential book in your collection.
Many thanks to Amazon who managed to source me a copy - well worth the wait.
