Product Description

Product Description

Japanese for Busy People is, as the title suggests, a concise course for "busy" students who want to learn natural, spoken Japanese as effectively as possible in a limited amount of time. Three main texts-Japanese for Busy People I, Japanese for Busy People II, and Japanese for Busy PeopleIII-with related workbooks, cassette tapes, CDs, teacher's manuals, and videos make up this fully integrated three-level series. At each level, enough vocabulary and grammar have been provided to enable the learner to communicate in uncomplicated adult language without having to memorize excessive amounts of vocabulary and language patterns that are not immediately useful. All components of the Japanese for Busy People series have been prepared under the guidance of a working group of experienced Japanese language instructors who reviewed and tested the material in an authentic classroom environment.
Japanese for Busy People I: The Workbook is the ideal resource for any student wishing to improve oral fluency and speak Japanese at normal conversational speed. This collection of oral drills has been developed to provide practice for sentence patterns presented in both the Revised Edition and Kana Version of Japanese for Busy People I. The Workbook can be used both in the classroom as a supplement for introducing or reviewing lessons, and outside the classroom for homework and review. When coordinated with the exercises and quizzes in the main textbook, it should enable learners to improve their command of basic Japanese in a relatively short time.
This fully illustrated Workbook Includes:
o "Sentence Pattern Drills" for better, quicker, and more natural Japanese sentences.
o "Situation Drills" for more accurate and relevant usage of sentences and expressions.
o "Vocabulary Drills" for speedy and long-lasting vocabulary retention.
Japanese for Busy People I: Workbook Tapes (available separately) has been specially designed to support this workbook. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

If you’re serious about learning Japanese, don’t buy this book without first checking out the kana version. Japanese for Busy People I comes in two versions. They cost the same, cover the same grammatical ground, using the same dialogues and the same vocabulary. The CDs and workbooks that you can also buy are equally applicable to both. The only difference is that this version uses mainly western characters (known as romaji), and the other uses only Japanese characters (known as kana) to write Japanese. I bought this romaji version, but less than halfway through spent the money again, to buy the kana version.

An excellent book, BUT if you do not learn the hiragana and katakana, you will have a shock when you get on to Book 2. In my opinion, it would be better to buy the kana version, and don't bother with romaji at all, otherwise you will think you are making good progress, and then you will find that it has actually held you back in the long run.

Excellent 22 Oct 2000
Format:Paperback
The series is certainly well structured and paced - the best I've seen for straight beginners. I was able to attain a surprising level of competence fairly quickly and painlessly. If you're serious about Japanese however, I'd suggest getting the Kana version, and skip the Romanized text altogether. I have also obtained the follow-on Japanese for Professionals.
