Having lived in Japan this is just the sort of book I wish I had had when I was there. Not so much a guide book as a way to know how people live in Japan and how to make the most of a longer (probably working) stay in that country, but worth getting even for arm chair readers with a general interest in other countries.
Bramble's real insight is mixed and lots of useful understandings of the way life works in Japan all related with a gently humorous style that's easy to read and pleasantly personal.

The tips on page 80 about getting 'key money' back from a Japanese landlord are alone worth the cost of the book - that would have saved me some £300 had I known when I lived there!

Generally recommended though it's surprisingly hard to find in bookshops.

This book goes into some detail that many people would not usually think about, like how to obtain a work visa and how the banks operate and that a foreign debit card may not work in most Japanese ATM (ATMs at airports and main train stations will be the best ones to use). It also gives information on your rights involving 'Key money' (a deposit for the landlord) when moving from property to property, which many people just ignore when moving out, but you can be entitled to reclaim some. Useful tips and politeness are also given on subjects, like what to do and not to do with chopsticks and how to show respect in the workplace. A very good book for travellers wanting to know deeper information about subjects which other tourist books do not discuss. A very interesting read!

Informative but... 28 Feb 2011
Format:Paperback
The book contains loads of information about Japan and life in Japan, specially targeted to expats that need help coping with Japanese culture and daily life problems.
Unfortunately this book has a few shortcomings - the viewpoint is sometimes just biased to an American point-of-view, and despite the updated editions some information presented are no longer actual or relevant. The most important oversight I found was the quick skimming over - a paragraph of half-a-page - of the deeply ingrained culture of Japanese comic books (mangas) and cartoon animation (anime). The author mentions he doesn't understand why adults might read comics (he clearly doesn't) and just ignores a fundamental aspects that has shaped Japanese culture (and the foreign perception of it) for the last five decades.
