Many thanks to Baen Books for reprinting these two volumes as one. Originally printed as Judgement On Janus & Victory on Janus they have been out of print for far too long.
Premise:
Enter Nail Renfrew, resident of the Dipple a great melting pot of cultures and refugee's from a great interstellar war. His homeworld lost and work almost impossible to find he sells himself as a bondsman to provide for his mother.
Shipped to a distant planet he finds himself virtually a slave for a strict religious sect. They used bondsmen to clear the great forests that cover the world. However they are concealing something, occaisionally caches of 'treasure' are discovered proof of an intelligent native species.
Nail finds one such cache and contracts the 'green sick'. He is left to die but instead awakens much later to find he has been transformed into a native of that planet - an Iftin. Not only does he have the body but also mind and memories of one.
Judgement & Victory on Janus are his adventures.
Andre Norton wrote a darned good yarn with these two books but she also touched on other matters i.e. mans impact on his environment, how he interacts with other cultures. Andre Norton not only set out to entertain us younsters the first time these were printed but also to educate us. It is a measure of her talent that she succeeded in both.
