This has to be a fairly unique project. In January 2011 former Hefner frontman Darren Hayman set himself the task of writing and recording a song a day for the entire month. That's 31 tracks in 31 days. That's quite a challenge! All 31 tracks that resulted are released on this impressive double album. The first run of 1500 each has a sleeve individually illustrated by Darren. The one we got was a really great drawing of a dog, a simple line sketch but wonderfully capturing a slightly quizzical expression on its face. So we were impressed even before putting a CD in the player!
And when the music started to play we continued to be very impressed. Darren rose to the challenge spectacularly, turning out track after track of catchy tunes and interesting lyrics on a whole range of subjects. OK, so it's a little rough around the edges, the nature of the challenge meant that there was no time to polish each track, but there isn't really a duffer on here and by and large it's a magnificent album. It's accessible, which is an increasingly rare thing these days.
An excellent album, a real feat by any standards. It would be churlish to award it anything less than 5 stars.
