This long lost jazz-rock gem from former Abba support guitarist was a very welcome find on CD given that my aged vinyl copy of The Chinese had been showing definite signs of wear for several years. It's very individual and brimming with uncompromised inspiration, though in places it's also undeniably dark in tonal and harmonic hue. The Chinese was the first album of its ilk that I really got into and which, I suppose, pointed the way forward for my tastes, though I didn't really realise it at the time. When you're in the mood, it's absolutely brilliant. Mr Schaffer plays mostly electric guitar, but the bluesy acoustic track, Marbles, is superb whilst the 40 second solo acoustic link track between Harvest Machine and Fillet Mignon (not Fillings Mignon, as listed on this reissue!) is nice as well.

The core crew of musicians includes Stefan Brolund (bass), Bjorn Jason Lindh (flute & keyboards), Ola Brunkert (drums), Jan Bandel (tablas, xylofon & vibraphone) and Malando Gassama (congas & percussion), all of which should give you a fair idea of the sound of this album. Assorted other Scandinavian musicians appear here and there, though on the title track we find John Rabbit Bundrick, best known for his contributions to many UK albums and membership of the band Crawler, even though he is apparently of American stock. Not that I've anything against John Bundrick, though why they should have chosen a UK based sessions man to appear on just one track can only be guessed at (his nickname Rabbit, by the way, is due to his truly bunny teeth.

as already opined , The Chinese is brilliant , but I like the Second LP too ! I bought both albums ( blind choice - I thought the artwork looked promising ) and they remain in my collection still . I taped them to keep the LP's in good nick and now have them on my laptop. Having paid 40 pence each (W.H.Smith new year sale) it was a real pleasure to find the music was so good.............they will not stray from my possession ...ever.
If you come across The Chinese , grab it and hold on .... ten stars !

World class classic guitar album from Sweden 30 Oct 2003
By Kenneth Skoog - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Jan-Erik "Janne" Schaffer guitar player from the Stockholm area of Sweden. This was his first soloalbum from 1973-74.
The CD version is a little bit different from the vinylversion, but in (almost) a good way. When this was initially released it came in two versions. The Swedish version (This cover) and the international version (with a different cover). The songs on the CD version is all the songs from the international version, PLUS HIS SECOND ALBUM, "Janne Schaffers andra LP". There are not all the songs from the second album but all but one (Underhuggaren) of the best songs are in there.
The music are combinations of many different styles.
Basically what was called "Jazz-Rock" in the 1970's.
It's not from a Swedish perspective as some people might say. There are some minor Swedish folkmusic infl. But at the same time there influences from let's say asian folkmusic too. The fact that Schaffer was a very sought after sessionmusician in the -70's including playing on some ABBA records does not apply here. The music is very international up in your face Jazz-Rock type. This album was
actually sold up around 20.000 items or more in Sweden at the time. But then again this kind of music (today thought of as uncommercial music) was then much more commercial..
If you like groups like Brand X, The Mahavishnu Orchestra, Larry Coryell's Eleventh House, Return to Forever (with guitarist), 1970's Steve Kahn, The Jeff Beck Jazz-Rock albums and that kind of music with emphasis on guitar (mostly electrical). Don't miss this one or any of the many others that Janne Schaffer has released later even up until today.

A Swedish Guru 14 Jun 2000
By Sigmund Ruud - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This Swedish guitar player is probably unknown for the world outside Scandinavia. Nevertheless, he's worked with members of Toto and he was also the main guitarist on all the ABBA albums! His own musical style is mainly instrumental with a mixed cocktail of jazz, fusion and quite a bit of Scandinavian folk music. This CD release is his two first albums from 1973/74. Unfortunately none of them are complete due to time limitations, but still a good introduction to this remarkable musician.
His next albums was released by CBS and may be easier to get hold of around the world. If you want something that your neighbour has not, then get Janne Schaffer's CD!
Schaffer's debut 22 Sep 2005
By Lovblad - Published on Amazon.com

While he has moved on to do bigger and better things, this debut album by Jan Scaffer is quite exceptional in many ways. His guitar playing is of exceptional quality and this has been reflected in his many further recordings, mainly released, unfortunately, in Sweden. Indeed, this is guitar based rock with jazz touches that needs to be heard.
