I wouldn't use a basal reading program to teach reading - I'm of the phonics school - but I really liked this book. Like most basal readers it has a list of words in the back, and I was about to write this off as old-fashioned when I realised it was fully decodable and clear, and he knew all the words. So it was actually quite motivating, and clear, using high frequency words in simple sentences for practice.
Recommended - particularly for the very early reader who will be motivated by the fact they read a "big book". Liked its innocence too, a lot of the reading program books now seem to have different values, people are always getting in trouble or laughs at other's expense. I've learned to watch out for ideology!
In this book children are children.
