wonderful memories,
By
This review is from: Janet and John: Here we Go (Janet & John Books) (Hardcover)
I grew up with these books and I am delighted to see them back in print. Although, we live in completely different times to when they were first published there is something utterly enchanting about them. Looking at them is like re-visting your childhood, a time when life seemed more simple.

Humour?,

This review is from: Janet and John: Here we Go (Janet & John Books) (Hardcover)
I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw that this precious and very effective reading resource has now been categorised as 'Humour'.My generation was taught to read through the pages of Janet and John and their associated story books. By the time I was eight I was reading Enid Blyton's Brer Rabbit stories and also Just Like Jennings. As a university graduate in English grammar I owe the origin of my reading AND spelling skills to Janet and John. Sad to find that this invaluable learning source is now regarded (probably by the humourless and paranoid 'politically correct' brigade) as 'Humour').

Fully Decodable so useful in a reading program,
By
This review is from: Janet and John: Here we Go (Janet & John Books) (Hardcover)
I wouldn't use a basal reading program to teach reading - I'm of the phonics school - but I really liked this book. Like most basal readers it has a list of words in the back, and I was about to write this off as old-fashioned when I realised it was fully decodable and clear, and he knew all the words. So it was actually quite motivating, and clear, using high frequency words in simple sentences for practice.Recommended - particularly for the very early reader who will be motivated by the fact they read a "big book". Liked its innocence too, a lot of the reading program books now seem to have different values, people are always getting in trouble or laughs at other's expense. I've learned to watch out for ideology! In this book children are children.
