Product Description

Album Description

Jane Gilchrist, the suburban mum elevated to well-deserved fame in the Channel 4 TV show Operatunity, finally gets to showcase her talents on her debut solo album, Vocalise. Performing a vast range of popular classics from Mozart and Puccini, to Gershwin and Lloyd Webber, she proves she's got what it takes to square up to the Bartolis and Gheorghius of the opera world.

Amazing First Album 24 Aug 2005
Format:Audio CD
I totally disagree with the other person that reviewed this CD. Jane has I think a beautiful quality of tone to her voice, yes there are a few flaws in it but I think that is because we have heard other professionals such a kiri and Sutherland sing 'The Laughing Song' & 'I want to be a prima Donna' her trills may not be as perfect as theirs but I still think she has a wonderful voice. Now that she is, I think at the beginning of a wonderful sining career, she will be able to sing just as wonderfully as the two ladies i mentioned. Her Ave Maria and O Holy Night are just a dream to listen too, Carmen's 'Habanera' is one of the best performance's I heard in a long time, Musetta's waltz aria is also beautifully sung, my 2 favourites on the CD are 'And this is my beloved' and 'The last rose of summer' (but this is only my opinion). As the general public we tend to make comparisons, we shouldn't, I beleive that you should judge people on their own performance rather than comparing them to others, in her own right Jane Gilchrist is a truly amazing talent and we should be greatful to channel 4 and Operatunity for reveling her talent to us, I think she is a wonderful lady with a great personality, give the lady a chance this is her first CD and not a thing wrong with it, just sit back and enjoy, I look forward to buying more of her CDs and learning more about her, roll on the day when I have the chance to actually see her perform in person.

A disappointment. 18 Feb 2005
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Ms Gilchrist sings everything in exactly the same way, so that tragic 1600s Handel sounds identical to tin pan alley 1930's Gershwin. Other problems are the absence of phrasing either musical or emotive and the constantly inaccurate pitching in Rachmaninov's Vocalise.
She is capable of making a lovely sound, and this serves her for very nice renditions of (hits from) Carmina Burana and Songs of The Auvergne, but there is only one sound, and that sound is not suitable for light music such as And This is My Beloved or musical theatre standards like The Man I Love. She has a top range in the strained manner of Bocelli and so is without the easy freedom usually associated with Puccini's highflying Quando M'en Vò. The agility needed for I Want to be a Prima Donna and The Laughing Song is also missing. In fact the lower range of her voice is the stronger part, so Carmen might be a good choice for her but she shows herself to be unsuitable for the heartless man-eater by presenting the Habanera in the style of a harmless flirt.
All in all this album is a disappointment.
