Very helpful 10 Jun 2009

The Advanced York Notes are generally the most helpful on the market and these are no exception. A thorough review of the novel which help in understanding the backdrop against whch it took place. Also very helpful when looking for a brief synopsis as a refresher to the novel

In comparison to other 'advanced' York Notes, aimed really at A level students, this was far too basic. The same 4 or 5 main ideas were reoccurring throughout, and it felt like the writer was simply filling up pages. There were numerous grammatical errors throughout hte writing, too. Overall, this was fine for the basic synopsis and chapter summaries, and then a few ideas about some of the main themes, but to be perfectly honest, there wasn't really much that anyone given a little time and in depth study could come up with themselves. Compared to the Wuthering Heights equivalent, where every single page had a new idea on it, hundreds of references to critics' opinions and interpretations of sometimes very precise aspects, comparisons with other literature, popular culture, even music, and detailed information about the context of its writing, I was disappointed with this.

I watch this every time it is screened on tv too - probably dozens of times over the years - always enjoyable. Helps if `the jane` is just a little bit pretty, but of course she never is - that would be slightly defeating the object....
