4.0 out of 5 stars Fiesty and Fiery, 26 Oct 2005
By L. Doughton (England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
For the purists among you who seek an 'accurate' adaptation of the book, I would suggest you look elsewhere as you will not find it here. This version is certainly shortened and the language very often veers from the text itself. However, despite all this I find myself incredibly fond of this film. For me, the most important factor is that Hinds and Moreton capture the electricity between the two characters perfectly. Although the screenplay does not always stick to the original I feel we are still left with a strong impression of the nature of the relationship between these characters, particularly Rochester's contrasting violent and passionate side and his sensative wounded side, and Jane's strong sense of moral and self. My suggestion would be to overlook the slightly modern style which so often creeps in to the script and simply become absorbed in the utterly convincing performances of these actors. An outstanding performance, I applaud them both.

5.0 out of 5 stars absolutely catches the essence of the book, 30 Jan 2002
By C. Pickup "bookiep" (birmingham, west midlands United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
samantha morton and ciaran hinds are perfectly cast as this pair of unlikely loves that is the story of jane eyre.
jane eyre faces a tough childhood when her parents die and she is forced into the care of relatives who neither want nor care for her.
she is sent away to a charity school to which she is abandoned again. surviving the tough regime she grows up to teach at the school and then takes up a position as governess to a young french girl in the north of england who is the ward of mr rochester.
mr rochester is older, ugly and embittered by what life has thrown at him
but he sees his salvation in jane and plans to marry her
but mr rochester has a secret in the attic he hasnt told his love about.....

this version of the charlotte bronte novel is absolutely true to the book in spirit but not in detail of plot.
a number of scenes have been left out, but having seen the william hurt version where they are included , i believe that they are bits which, though adding to understanding do not add to the pace and passion of the plot.
i found that after the initial viewing the scenes i wanted to watch repeatedly were those between ms morton and mr hinds....i found them mesmerising....and the ones i fast forwarded to get to them would never have included the ones they left out
ciaran plays the most wonderful passionate mr rochester...morton a delightful yet restrained jane...
watch it
you will love it

Okay call me mushy, but I totally loved this! I think both Morton and Hinds were brilliant. This made me want to read the book, and now I love it even more. This made me cry, and nothing makes me cry! I must have watched this a hundred times. Buy it!
