A succulent mix of resonant harpsichord, squealing clarinet and seductive strings grace "Le Chanson De Slogan", the opening track to this record. It is the theme to the 1969 movie that first brought Jane Birkin and Gainsbourg together (as actors). She was to become his lover and greatest muse, and he her lifelong inspiration. On this album they share the honours. Well, almost: Gainsbourg plays the manipulative pop producer to the hilt, she gracefully acquiesces to all his desires. "69 Annee Erotique" finds the duo going head to tail in an act of mutual masturbation over a tumbling bassline and sensuous guitar strumming. On "Jane B." ,Gainsbourg has his paramour read out bland particulars of her identity, apparently inspired by the idea of logging the details of a Jane Doe found dead on the side of the road. This morose identification occurs over a reprise of "Je T'Aime"'s gothic funk with strings snatched from a composition by Chopin. Relief is provided by the more upbeat, music hall feel of "Elisa", a passionate paean to a girl half his age that is caught up in a rush of sweeping string arrangements and choppy piano. Also included is Gainsbourg's own rendition of "Les Sucettes", an ode originally written for an innocent pop muppet called France Gall. The double meaning of the song's lyrics--a little girl who loves sucking lollipops ("succettes")--becomes more than evident in the giddy delirium of its author's voice. --Chris Campion

A truly beautiful collection of songs that make you go back in time to the beginning of Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin's romance. You can feel their creative energy as they sing, how wonderfully he uses her as a source of inspiration and she moulds herself and her voice to his advice.
A suave voice, her girlish tone, blends with such grace with his deep, caramel like lyrics. The words are all with double meaning, you can't escape a bit of innuendo when listening to Serge Gainsbourg, especially if he's singing with his muse and lover, Jane. The song Les Sucettes is notorious for its half-hidden meaning (little girls sucking lollipops? I highly doubt it!). Outrageous for their time, but not at all too explicit for our times, this duo has a magical quality to it.
A friend of mine told me something I found quite interesting: Jane doesn't look English. She's French now, transformed by singing so many French songs and loving a genius of French poetry and composing.

Yes the king serge, and his queen Jane... This has to be one of the greatest albums of all time... Easily one of the top Serge releases. Needless to say what you have here is sophisticated "orchestral" pop on a level seldom touched by mere mortals outside of the beatles or possibly the zombies. This record isn't as funk heavy as his later releases (melody nelson pour example) or as wacked out as "the man with a cabbage head" .. this is more of a cerebral adult kind of pop music. But still packs some amazing bass riffs and killer drums (namely annee erotique)... Serges vocals are so high in the mix you can almost hear the beard stubble on the mic, and Birkin sounds like she's ready to cry on about every track... amazing and essential...

I Love Serge Gainsbourg and its a plus with Jane Birkin, and thanks to Light In The Attic its available in High Quality Vinyl (180 Grams Virgin Vinyl) and this preesing also includes a bonus 7 inch single in a paper sleeve of "La Chanson De Slogan" and B/W "Orang Outan". It also includes liner notes, a small comic book about how Jane Met Serge. The gate fold sleeve also had lyrics in English and French. Each album is numbered for example mine is number 658 out of 2,000.
This album is also remastered from the original mastertapes so it sounds perfect.

Jane Birkin is a goddess that would not be topped by Bardot.

This album is a passionate love tale with humor. I'm so glad B. Bardot didn't allow her recordings of the songs to be released. Jane is so intimate and raw and the passion between her and Serge is radiating throughout. Je T'aime...Moi Non is one of the most sensual beautiful songs ever recorded between lovers. This is not a studio creation like modern day music. The energy between real husband and wife is evident. And this disc is a must own for any Serge Gainsbourg fan and lover of great music.
